James McGinley & Ann McFadyen

Donegal

Hi, my great grandparents were James McGinley born about 1837 / 1841 Co. Donegal and he married Ann(ie) McFadyen on 28th February 1858 at RC church, Gortnaleck, Clondahorky, Co. Donegal. James died in a railway accident while working as a railway surfaceman near Dumbarton, Scotland on 9th May 1901.

I would greatly appreciate any information on the church and any other information. Thanks, John Dougan.

Can I ask where you obtained the date of the marriage between James and Anne since no records exist for the RC parish of Clondahorkey/Dunfanaghy/Doe for 1858?

From your message, it appears that the couple was from the townland of Gortnaleck which is a large townland in the southwest part of the civil parish of Clondahorky.

The current RC parish of Dunfanaghy currently consists of three churches. Holy Cross church as mentioned by Mary which is in Dunfanaghy is the principal church but from reviewing the map of the parish likely the church you want is St. Michael's in Cresslough. The current church is modern but there was a prior chapel in the townland of Cashelmore (Doe) which existed back to the late 1700s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Michael%27s_Church,_Creeslough

This chapel would have been four miles from Gortnaleck.https://www.raphoediocese.ie/parish/dunfanaghy-clondahorkey/#collapse-mass-4968

These comments are based on Gortnaleck being the correct location for the couple.
