O'Donnell's of Lergynasearhagh, Ardara, Donegal

Inishkeel (Donegal)

Hello,

First time poster here and really enjoying this website!

So I'm trying to find some more information on my paternal Irish ancestors. More specifically my x2 great grandfather, James O'Donnell. I have him and his family on both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census in the small townload of Lergynasearhagh, Ardara. Via Ancestry I discovered that he died in May 1915 and was born c.1834 when backdating his age against both the 1901/1911 censuses.

I'm not 100% sure that he was born in Lergynasearhagh (or even Donegal) but he certainly moved there, married an Anne Gallagher (c.1831-22nd January 1906) and had at least 3 children including my great grandfather, Patrick O'Donnell (1868-c.1931).

Likewise, I'm unsure if Anne was actually born in Donegal but have worked on that assumption but have been unable to find a marriage registration/record for James and herself. I would have thought that they married before 1865 as their first surviving daughter, Anne, was born in that year.

I've attached a grab from my Ancestry page showing James's details as I currently have them and can provide the profile page of his wife if helpful but I'd love to find out where they both came from and ideally pin down a birth date and then go on to find parents for both but fully appreciate how hard that can be!!

Many thanks for any help.

Kiern.

Senna82,

You are uncertain where James & Ann were born. Whether it was even in the county of Donegal.

The 1901 census shows both were born in the county. He was a farmer. They don’t move around much. He was probably born on the farm and his bride will have lived fairly nearby. (Farmers had neither the time nor the travel means to court someone living 30 miles away).

The RC parish records for Inniskeel only start in 1866. Likewise Ardara start in 1869. This is probably why you cannot locate any baptism or marriage records. They don’t exist.

The tithe applotment records for 1833 show a James O’Donel farming in Lergynascarhagh, so that might be his father there then.
