Cannon + Sweeney

Inishkeel (Donegal)

Hello. I am helping a friend search her ancestors. These were Denis Cannon and Susannah Sweeney of Inishkeel parish. Denis was born c. 1790 and Susannah c. 1785. I don't know when they married (1810?) and possiby had 5 children before emigrating to the U.S. c; 1836. They had other children in the U.S. (Morgan, Thomas, Ellen). Susannah Sweeney was from Rossbeg. I have seen there was a Susanna Swiney living in Rossbeg in Griffiths so I think this could have been a relative. From what I can see, there were Cannons (Cornelius, Owen, John) living in Lackagh in Griffiths which isn't far from Rossbeg so I thought this could be where Dennis Cannon was from.

We will be driving to Rossbeg and maybe Lackagh on May 12. I am wondering if anyone could provide information about historical places we could visit in the area which could have some meaning for this family search. From what I read, there was an RC chapel in Glenties in the past and I'm wondering if they could have been married there. Is this chapel still there? Or, would anyone have advice about other places of interest in the area?

Many thanks for any help.

The 1837 Lewis Topographical Dictionary indicated that there was a chapel in Glenties

The parish church can tell you if the chapel is still standing.

Thank you very much Roger. I will be contacting St Connell's Church about this.

I wanted to add that I have seen that there was a Denis Cannon in Meenavally in 1833 (Tithes Books) who was no longer there in 1857. So, I'm thinking this could be the Denis Cannon we were looking for. In looking at the map of Meenavally on Griffith's, there was a " Mulmosog House" there, I think occupied by George V Wilson. I'm wondering if he was the landlord there and what the history of this house is. So far, I haven't found any information on line about it. It doesn't look like there's anything there now (on the modern map).

Any information would be greatly appreciated! (perhaps there's a museum in the area with local history?)

Sincerely,

Ciindy
