McLaughlin, McMonagle, McDevitt from Glenswilly

i have been having a look for your ancestors but I can't seem to find them.  It is difficult to find records from the early 1800's in Ireland and many people hit a brick wall around these dates but  I can give you a few websites to check out and contact.  

You may have difficulty in finding anything on Catherine McDevitt.  In Donegal the name McDevitt is the same as McDaid and sometimes members of the same family use both of these surnames - for example two sisters - One might be Mary McDaid and the other Anne McDevitt.  It does make it extremely difficult to research.

I did know about the McDevitt-McDavid-McDaid-McDade surname variations, and that Irish records generally begin later than when my family left Ireland.  I do thank you for having a look anyway.  

I connected with the McLaughlin Clan a few years back, and while it is fascinating history, it doesn't really give me any direct connections to my family.  Still, it's nice to know there are a few high kings somewhere in the mix.

One thing perhaps you can clear up for me.  I'm a bit fuzzy on where exactly "Glenswilly" is.  What towns would be included in the parameters of the parish?

The parish of Glenswilly - is a combination of Conwal parish and glenswilly parish.  This is the civil parish of Conwal.

I believe Denis McLAUGHLIN married Catherine McDEVITT in Ireland. Both born early 1800s, They had two sons, Edward and Thomas. Their son Edward McLAUGHLIN born 1820-1830 married Rose McMONAGLE born 1822-1832. Edward & Rose emigrated to Philadelphia PA around 1850. I believe Denis and Catherine also emigrated to Philadelphia but not sure when and Denis died there in 1870. Thomas married Ellen in 1858. I have no other information on Ellen but think her maiden name may have been burns.

I descend from Denis and Catherine's son Thomas McLAUGHLIN born about 1832. Some records show Ellen as the first wife of Edward but I think she was Thomas's husband. Thomas and Ellen had Ellen A McLaughlin born 1864. She is my great grandmother.

What do you know of Rose McMonagle and her brother William?  My ancestor is a William McMonagle who was born about 1818 to William McMonagle and Mary Polly Arbuckle.  The older William was from Ireland, but I’m not sure if the younger William was born in Ireland or in Pennsylvania.  I don’t have any information on siblings.

Were your McMonagles in Philadelphia?  There are multiple family trees on Ancestry.com that show William McMonigal, son of William McMonigle and Mary Polly Arbuckle, living in Union OH.  Coincidentally, I also have a couple of non-direct line people in my tree who have the name with the spelling McMonigle.  I haven't found a connection between the two families.

I don't know a great deal about the McMonagles.  My great great grandparents are Edward McLaughlin and Rose McMonagle.  I don't know Rose's parents' names.   I was told the McMonagles were from Glenswilly, possibly from the area around Gartan and Churchill, but have no proof of that.  I do have a DNA match that appears to be on the McMonagle line and that family claims to be from Killygordon near Ballybofey in Donegal.  Have you done any DNA testing?

I looked back in my records, and I was mistaken when I said Rose's brother was William.  Her brother's name was Daniel McMonagle, born about 1824 in Ireland, died 1874 Philadelphia.  Daniel married Catharine Bradley.  This couple, like my Rose & Edward, lived in the Port Richmond section (Ward 25) of Philadelphia PA.  They lived at 1724 Richmond St when Daniel died.

Their children were Daniel 1845-1917 (married Alice Clarke), Susan 1849-1932 (Francis Ebbecke), and William F 1851-1933 (Mary McCafferty).  This William F continued to live in his parents' house with his mother, even after he married.  He worked first as a grocer, then as a real estate broker.  Richmond St was renumbered at some point and 1724 became 2972.  By 1910, William and his family had moved to Fisher Avenue in Ward 22 Philadelphia, and in 1920 were living at 617 Chelten Ave Ward 22 Philadelphia.
