John McCann and Catherine Kerrigan

Lissan (Derry)

Hello, I'm researching my 3rd great grandparents John and Catherine (Kerrigan) McCann of Letteran, Lissan I'm coming on a brief Ireland visit at the end of September 2026 and will be heading to Derry. I thought that I might find some cemeteries or, even better live relatives. I have only started working on this line recently. John was born about 1786 and Catherine in 1805. They married In Lissan in 1827. Their Daughter Mary, My 2nd great grandmother was born in 1840 also in Letterman, Lissan. It appears that most of the 10 children ended up in the United States. However there are several McCann's in Griffith's Valuation in that same area, so either some stayed or might siblings or cousins of John.

Any input might help me .

The RC records for Lissan parish start in 1839. I checked the 1901 census and the 1911 census records for Letteran townland and the only McCanns were unmarried James McCann and Mary McCann. Here is the 1911 census record. https://nationalarchives.ie/collections/search-the-census/view-pdf/?doc=nai002875942  Both McCanns were born pre-1839 so we can't determine their parents.

Have you taken a general DNA test? You may have matches with 4th cousins who have more information on your MCanns.

If it is of any help, the 1831 Irish census lists 4 McCann households in Letteran. 2 were headed by a John McCann and 2 by Pat McCann & Pat McCann jnr (so probably father & son).
