William Crawford

I am seeking any information on my ancestor William Crawford who lived in County Derry, possibly Kilrea?

He married (c.1800) Bridget Bradley and had at least one child, Mary - see below.

He was born circa 1770-1780? I'm basing this on the age of his daughter Mary when she dies in 1853.

Here's a bit of information on his daughter Mary.

Mary Crawford married Edward McCague/McKague in Kilrea? N.Ireland in the mid-1820s (a guess) and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia on the ship Reliance, arriving in 1850 with 4 children Hugh (b.1827?) Margaret (b.1829?) Bridgette/Biddy (b.1833?), William (b.1837?)

Sadly Mary died in November 1853 in Collingwood, an inner suburb of Melbourne.

Her death certificate gave me some useful details. Namely her parents’ names, her age (45) and her father’s occupation – a tailor. It also indicates that her father has died, but her mother, Bridget, is living.

Any other details about William or pointers on where I might look for more information would be greatly appreciated.

I am aware that records for this time are scarce so realise that there may not be much to be found, and even if there is, it can be hard to say definitively that the details relate to my family and not another family.

I am trying to find info on your family. Records from Ancestry. On the ship's roster they went by the name McKegg. I haven't found additional info on William Crawford.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for this. I do know a bit about the McCague/McKegg/McCaig/McCaigne's- (lots of versions of the surname) once they arrive in Australia.

I only very recently discovered that there are some nineteenth century Irish Census records and found one for an Edward McKague-Kilrea (1831) a household of 1 familiy consisting of 2 males and 2 females - this could be my family as only 2 of the 4 children who came to Australia were born by this date and they were Roman Catholic - I believe the Crawford's might have been Presbyterian?

I don't think Willam Crawford left Ireland (could be wrong) and wonder where else I might look for any info on him but will also search the 1831 census records for him, now that I know it exists for Derry!
