The surname Dwinell originated in County Derry ~ Londonderry, in the province of Ulster, where the family had a landed gentry seat from very ancient times.
Variations found of the name Dwinell include Devine, O'Devine, O'Devin, O'Deuin, Davin, Devane, Devenney, Dwane, Duane, Dwain, Dwayne, Dwayn, Devan, Davine, Devyne etc. Not to be confused with Donnell or McDonald.
Earliest records on RootsIreland show a Bryan O'Devin baptised 1-Sep-1655 in St Columb's Church of Ireland. Father – Turlagh O'Devin aka O'Deuin of Templemore who married Katharine O'Kannan in 1653 (witnessed by Hugh O'Donnell & Gilber Fleming) also in St Columb's Church of Ireland. Other records from this period reveal O'Devine Church of Ireland members in Clondermot and Killelagh.
