Elizabeth Josephine Bail(e)y m/o Fr John Sullivan

Passage West (Cork)

There is a family story that my cousins are related to Fr John Sullivan, now a Blessed, on the other side that their relationship to my family. I have been trying to verify this, and think the link must be on the Bailey side (the Catholic side) at some point with the Donovan, O'Sullivan, O'Keeffe, or Herlihy families on my cousin's side. Docs on Fr John all said his mother was from a Passage West family which can be documented, but her birth cannot. Her reputed birth year is 1823 and reputed father is Robert (the latter very well verified as to his career) but I cannot find a birth record, nor can I find a mother's name. I think the family did live in the Passage West area. someone did post a birth year of 1790 and a father's name of Robert but there is no record to prove this given.

Any ideas on the birth of this woman? or other family members?

Cheers,

Andrew Finglas.

Dear MaryTV...yes tha tis the correct family for Fr John Sullivan who was a Jesuit. Thank you so much for all that work... I have ancestry but think I was lost in all the options.

There was a brother named Francis, so the Robert Francis could be he, and I knew there were two sisters but did not have names for them..Ellen certainly could be one.

But as I wrote I know the father was Robert, and think Mary Thomas then very likely the mum.

Some of the family think the relationship of Fr John Sullivan to my cousins-of-cousins O'sullivans is direct, and of course the "O" was used irregularly. But the Sullivans were Protestant, moneyed and tended to law, and higher realms of business where OI'Sullivans on "my" side were Catholic, mostly all teachers northwest of Cork City in Kanturk, Newmarket areas.  Hence my lookingo into the mother who was Catholic and her lines. As you probably know back then the girls followed the religion of the mother, the boys that of the father, so Fr John was raised a Protestant but then converted, finally entering the Jesuit order.

I'm going to plug this in to my ancestry tree, then see what I can find going back on the Thomas side.

THanks, again!

Andrew

Andrew,

You might want to take a DNA test. Maybe you will find a family connection.

Mary
