Tracing my Irish ancestors from Newmarket and Macroom

Newmarket North Cork (Cork)

I am tracing my Catholic Irish ancestors from Macroom and Newmarket, County Cork but am not sure if I have the correct connections at the moment. My great great grandfather was born in Newmarket, County Cork on November 28, 1838 to parents Patrick Connell and Mary Sullivan who were both from Macroom, County Cork. I have been searching for validating evidence on Roots Ireland, on the Catholic Parish Registers at NLI, on Irish Genealogy and on all of Ancestry, My Heritage, FindmyPast and Family search.

So far I have baptism records for James and his five siblings. All of them (James - 1838, Philip - 1833, Patrick - 1835, Mary and Johanna - 1845) except one (Elizabeth - 1831) had their baptisms registered in Newmarket but the first child, Elizabeth was registered in Glantane.

I also have baptism records for Patt Connell (1811) and Mary Sullivan (1809) - both born in Macroom. The confusing part is that the only marriage record I can find for a Patt (Patritius/Patritii) and Mary (Maria) Connell is recorded in Eyeries on 11th February, 1831. Jeremiah Connell and Michael Leary were the witnesses to this wedding. I cannot find any other marriage records for these names on any of the sites but this wedding is on almost all of the search sites I use.

Their first child was Elizabeth, born 6 weeks after the wedding so I am wondering if I have the correct people. Eyeries would have been a 12 - 15 hour carriage ride from Macroom/Glantane and I am not sure why they would have been there at all and if it is them, why did they return to Glantane and then move to Newmarket, where it seems they stayed. Patrick (Patt) was noted to be a farmer and I have also checked the land records to see if they were working a farm in any of these places. Was this movement common at this point in history?

I don't want to try to go back further until I am sure I have the correct Connell ancestors so I am hoping someone may be able to help me.

Thanks,

Bronwyn

Bronwyn,

My take on the above information is that given James (1838) and Patrick (1835) (I could not find the other siblings you mentioned, and I looked on irishgenealogy.ie and Roots Ireland) were both baptized in the RC parish of Newmarket; then that is also where their parents were from. The marriage records for the parish began in 1833, so it is possible they were married before that. I would eliminate the RC parish of Eyeries for certain due to the great distance from Newmarket. How do you know the parents were from the RC parish of Macroom? The three parishes of Newmarket, Glantane, and Macroom are even a distance from each other, and unless Patrick was employed as a tradesman who moved from place to place, I think movement between those three areas is also unlikely. I think that perhaps you have found records of other people named Patrick Connell and Mary Sullivan as these names are not uncommon. For example, a quick look at Ancestry, and one will find another Patrick Connell married to a Mary Sullivan in Kerry as well as this same named couple having children in Limerick.

Regards,

Carolyn

Carolyn,

Thank you so very much for your quick response to my message. I also thought I was probably off-track with the parish of Eyeries but was hopeful as the names all matched and I wasn't sure if people would have moved around for work in that era. I have uploaded Jame's, Patrick's and Philip's Baptism record which I found on FamilySearch which references the Catholic Parish Records but the Macroom links had been for Patrick's birth and his siblings which now may be a different family entirely.

I had someone reach out to me from Macroom as we have a DNA match possibly the same 3x great grandfather which I thought maybe validating the people I had found so I will also contact them again to see if they have any family history archives that may help.

I am hoping to be in Ireland next year as I am speaking at a Conference in Dublin. The last time I came to Ireland from Australia, I didn't really know what county my family was from as I had only started the search for ancestors then. My plan is to travel from the Conference to Cork, particularly Newmarket and see what else I can find about my heritage. I am excited to be there and learn more about the lives of my Irish family.

Thanks again Carolyn (by the way, your name is the same as my mother's name and it is her great grandfather who travelled to Australia),

Bronwyn,

Now with Philip’s record you attached, it seems he was the first born child, thus parents were married prior to that year, and you won’t find their marriage record due to date unavailable. Your family must be from the RC parish of Newmarket, so I’d definitely concentrate on that area. DNA evidence is not always the most reliable way to find relatives. I don’t think Macroom is where your family is from in Cork.

Thanks so much Carolyn. You have been so helpful and I really appreciate your time. One last question - do you think it would help if I went to Newmarket when I travel to Ireland next year? Is there a local family history group and/or an archive centre there? I will keep looking for anything else I can find in the meantime.

take care,

Bronwyn

Bronwyn,

Just to be clear, the baptism records for the three Connell sons are from the RC parish of Newmarket...not the town land of Newmarket necessarily. There is no information on any of their records to indicate which of the many town lands in Newmarket parish they were from. You might contact the Mallow Hertitage Centre to ask their advice. They have information on the parishes in the Diocese of Cloyne of which Newmarket is a part. Their email is mallowheritagecentre@gmail.com.

Good Luck!

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

That makes a lot of sense. I spent the weekend looking at the maps of the RC and Civil Parishes and I could see that these covered a lot of land and towns so the referral to the Mallow Heritage Centre is so helpful. I will definitely email them today and see if they can help me further.

You have been such a good help to me and I really appreciate your time and support,

thanks,

Bronwyn
