Mystery, I need a hand to solve

Mitchelstown (Cork)

Mary Burgess married Michael Leahy in Mitchelstown and started having kids between 1793 until 1819 and came to Canada as a Peter Robinson member. (That is all well proven) The mystery is her mother Ellen.

Many many people have Ellen married to a John Leahy b1761/1 and died 1790 to 1825 many death records but a popular name.This would make her Ellen Leahy but I can find no records of her actually called that, all records point to her parents name of Cleary.

There are records of Dennis & Margarett (Regan) birthing Ellen.

My question is this, Why would Ellen not have taken the Leahy name and use a completely different last name of Burgess? If John Leahy died early she could have remarried a Burgess fellow and her and her daughter Mary use that name but I find no records of any Burgess

Any help or hints would be appreciated

Thanks

Kevin Leahy
