Condon family from Mitchelstown, Cork
Hiya
Firstly, apologies. I know these forums are full of children of the diaspora looking ancestors who have a romantic concept of all things Irish. I'm trying not to be that.
I'm trying to trace the family our great great great grandfather.
So, the fellow in question was John Condon. He was born roughly 1814. He seems to appear in the marriage register as having married 29 January 1839 in Mitchelstown, Cloyne Diocese, to "Cath Mauricy", which people think is probably Catherine Morrissey
He travelled with Catherine in December 1939 on the ship China from Waterford to Sydney Australia. The poor sods had a baby around the cape of good hope. At his death, his certificate cited his parents names as Patrick Condon and Marg. - Margaret or it could be Mary.
Also travelling on the same ship was a Richard Condon, who also came from Mitchelstown, so I am guessing he could have been a brother or cousin or related somehow.
So there is some evidence that they might have taken out loans before they travelled and were funded by the Australian government at the time. After that the line is pretty clear to us.
Luckily they got out just before the famine. Anyway, I have looked through bad scans of online versions of old church records until my eyes bled, but I can not find evidence of the correct Patrick and Marg. Condon. I'm guessing if they were still in Mitchelstown that they may well have not made it through the famine, and might not have been buried with headstones.
Does any of that sound familiar to anyone? I'm fairly pessimistic that that might be as far as it's possible to get, given records probably weren't great around the great hunger.
Back in 2019, I did actually visit the ruins of the Catholic church in Kilworth and had a creep around the old graveyard, but the grass is waist-high, the graves are pretty worn, there's a terrifying sign on the gate saying that unpermitted burials are illegal and at one stage, my foot broke through something in the soil. Hopefully I am not cursed!
Thanks for any help you can give. And if not, that's fine! I promise not to make a claim on the castle.
