Thanks for sharing your ancestral tree on your Hanley family tree. I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and it appears that James was baptized January18 1872 (unless Roots mistranscribed the year). He had a brother Thomas (1871) and a sister Margaret(1876). Did his mother die young? I found an 1879 civil marriage record for a widower James Hanley who married a Mary Molony. See second record at this link:

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1879/11069/8050289.pdf

Note that his father Thomas was shown as deceased in 1879. Four children of this marriage: Bridget (1880) Michael (1881) Mary (1884) James(1886).

I located a January 1879 death record for a Catherine Hanley see second record at the link https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1879/06524/4879890.pdf

Thomas Hanley died in1874 see last record at link https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1874/020650/7245886.pdf

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your comment.  I believe the information on Catherine's death is correct, she was the first wife of my great grandfather James.  James remarried and had several more children with Mary Moloney.  I am in contact with the Hanleys descended from the second marriage.  Although it's possible that I am related to the other Hanleys you site, my great great grandfather Thomas was likely born around 1800.  I have a record of his marriage to Margaret and the baptisms of his children in the 1820s.  It's all in the McCabe History book posted to the Leitrim Roscommon genealogy website.

I am very interested in researching the earliest Hanlys  ( the name changed to Hanley in the late 1800s).  I believe they were well established in Labbamolaga in the 1700s.  Some researchers believe there was a Roscommon connection.

Your help is much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Paul Hanley

Hi again Roger,

So I went back and looked at the links you posted.  You do have the correct marriage record for James and Mary Moloney.  Interesting situation there, James' first wife died in 1879 and he remarried in 1879.  I guess f you were a widower with three small children; you didn't waste any time finding a second wife.

I'm not sure about the Thomas Hanley who died in 1874.  If you go back into my book, Thomas Hanley was dead well before 1874, not sure when and his widow had taken over the lease on the property that Thomas leased from the Earl of Kingston.  Subsequently son James took over the lease.  I think the Hanleys stayed on thet lease until 1900? and then the leaseholder married a McCarthy and moved to County Limerick.

Genealogy is a game, lots of fun.

We are off to a good start.  Thanks Roger.

Hi Paul,

I hope you don't mind me reaching out regarding help with my 'Hanley'  and or 'Ward' family ancestors.

I am currently researching my family tree and have unfortunately, hit a brick wall after identifying William Hanley (B 1823-1830) as my Great Great Grandfather and Margaret  Ward as my Great Great Grandmother.

The limited information I have been working with is the data obtained from the 1871 to 1911 censuses for the district of Paddington,London where my Hanley family consistently resided. As expected, there are inconsistencies the information documented in these censuses regarding the place and date of birth for both William and Margaret. I am unsure if these discrepancies are due to errors in recall or errors made by the enumerator.

William Hanley I believe was born between the dates of 1823 and 1830, his place of birth could have been Cork or various locations in London, England.

My G.G.Grandmother Margaret I believe was born around 1834-1836 - her birth location is a mystery too in that it has been documented  as Cork, Co Mayo or London ?

I have a marriage certificate dated 1851 for a Margaret Ward and Francis Hanley - they married in the parish of Marylebone London. Thomas Hanley and John Ward are listed as their fathers.

Despite extensive searching I have been only able to obtain birth certificates for their male children named William Maile Hanley and Edward Hanley - William's father is listed as William Hanley and Frank (Francis) Hanley  listed as the father of Edward, Margaret Hanley Nee Ward is the mother on both certificates - could William and Francis/ Frank be brothers or maybe they are the same person using different parts of their name ?

Do you know if the Hanley and Ward surname is most commonly found in Cork or Co. Mayo  - and do you know of any sites I could explore that could reveal when the Hanley's or Ward's came to London ?

I appreciate your time.

Thanks.

Penny.
