Shot in the Dark

Cork

I am looking for the home of Joseph Condon born 12 Dec 1822 (Ireland) no other info. He settled outside of Peterborough Ontario with hundreds of Peter Robinson Settlers in 1843 (according to a later Canadian census ) and well traced from there starting in 1851. He married in Canada a Canadian P/R settler daughter Mary Sheehan in 1849. His parents may have been a William Condon and a Mary A?

There were many  Peter Robinson Settler Condon Families David &  John on Brunswick, John & Thomas on Resolution, Richard on Stakesby. Does anyone have info for this area on a Joseph Condon b Dec 1822?

Hi,

Not sure if you are familiar with this RootChat posting? Maybe it is yours?

I need help finding my Joseph Condon

The posting mentions children- Joseph and Ellen.

Where did you find his exact birth date? Since birthdays typically weren't celebrated in Ireland, most people in the 1800s didn't know their exact birth month or year. Sometimes the year on censuses and other records could be off by 10 years. Civil records were started in 1864. The parish record would have his baptism (if they had started a registry when he was baptized). He could have checked before he went to Canada.

I found this record on RootsIreland (paid subscription). There were Josephs also baptized in 1824 (p. Joseph C. and Mary Casey) and 1825 (p. Joseph C. and Margaret McDonald). they were both born in Mitchelstown.

This Joseph had the following siblings- Michael 1820, David 1826, Redmond 1829. Mother's name also spelt Grinane and Grenane. His parents wouldn't have been one of the original settlers. Perhaps he joined another Condon relative in1843.

I had a look with the details you gave me. Most relevant records I could see had 'Ireland' recorded as place of birth so I think perhaps the shipping / passenger lists may be the most fruitful ones to check. He may have arrived as a child and didn't know exactly where in Ireland he came from.

List of possibilities to search ;https://www.archives.gov.on.ca/ for passenger lists including the Peter Robinson lists. The following  site has a large list of ships which would be worth checking. https://immigrantships.net/index.htmlIt

It s possible that Joseph was born before 1822 so that should be kept in mind when searching lists.

I had a look on The Irish Ancestors website for the distribution of the Condon surname. It was very well represented in the Munster province around the mid nineteenth century. More details may be found here which may help with your search.    https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=condon

I hope this helps in your search.

Thank you ever so much Mary, the birthdate I filled in long ago and many Ancestry family trees have it also BUT you info said 2 Nov 1822 Baptism so 12 Dec could be typo. Years ago I found Ellen Greene with a Child born dec 1822 Joseph but father was listed as William so your most likely correct with Joseph & Ellen. I will see if I can follow your lead to Canada.

On the settlers I figured his parents were not PR settlers but lived among them in Cork area prior to then leaving as my Joseph settled with them in Peterborough area 20 years after.

Thank you also Majella, I will check those sites now with the info Mary provided.

Kevin Leahy descendant of Michael Leahy Peter Robinson Settler.

Morning Mary

Question for you, researching the Condon information you found for me at NLI the names fit perfectly with my Condon family in Canada but I can find no paperwork on emigration or passenger lists. I have reached out to a Condon at FTDNA whom we share a large chunk of DNA and he is away travelling but will contact when he returns. In the meantime I checked the Griffith tax report, it was taken 1852 well after my Joseph was in Canada but plenty of Condon's remain in the parish of Brigown with some Leahy's who never left. I also checked the Tithe Applotment books dated 1833 and found Condon's in Cork but not listed in Mitchelstown.

While waiting for my DNA shared Condon to return can you suggest any other things which my help determine whether the Condon you found could be my Condon?

Ships passenger lists arriving in Canada 1820 to 1850

Per site- "There are no comprehensive ships passenger lists of immigrants arriving in Canada prior to 1865. Until that year, shipping companies were not required by the government to keep their passenger manifests."

Have you checked Joseph's children baptism records in Canada? One of the sponsors might be a relative of Joseph. Do you have Joseph's official marriage record which might include his parents' names? Do you have Joseph's death record?

Good ideas, I will go see what is available

kevinleahy@cogeco.ca

Joseph & Ellen married in 1849 before Canada had a report system , it was just a Church register and probably Ellen's brother a Sheehan and a Sullivan. The children's baptisms contain more Sheehan's which makes sense as she was born in Canada so likely surrounded by family and some random other people.

I will just have to wait for my Condon DNA match to return home to get his info as he stated in his reply he had a number of Leahy's mixed throughout the 4 generations of info.
