Shandon, Cork - Church of Ireland baptism 1854 - EATON

Cork

I am looking for the baptism of Thomas Eaton, born 22 January 1854, and specifically for the name of his mother as recorded in the entry.

His Royal Marines service record (The National Archives, ADM 159/39/2229) gives his birthplace as "Shand, Cork, Ireland" and his religion as "C of England", so I believe he was baptised in one of the two Shandon Church of Ireland parishes - St Anne's or St Mary's. Both registers survive and both cover 1854, on microfilm at the National Archives of Ireland and in the original at the RCB Library. I would suggest January to June 1854 as the range.

His father was John Eaton, possibly John Charles Eaton, a soldier, so the family were in Cork with the garrison rather than local to it.

The mother's name is the crux. Two women are possible - Rhoda Harding, who married John Eaton at Brighton in 1848, or an "Alice" who appears only in an unsourced family note - and this baptism is the document that would decide between them.

Thomas was my wife's great-great-grandfather. Her uncle holds the surviving family papers and photographs, and between us we have run out of anything that answers this.

I have also written to the RCB Library, so no one should duplicate that effort - but any local knowledge, or a transcript I have not found, would be hugely welcome.

With thanks,

Ross Gerring

The 1861 UK census says Thomas was born in Dublin and his brother John in Dundalk in Co. Louth.  (Yes, I know that other records say Thomas was born in Cork.) You might want to take a look.
