Lynch, Holden, Godsill, Pruett & McNeill

Cork

Seeking ancestr-al family.

Elizabeth Lynch arrived in NY in 1850 --husband unknown. Parish & countyunknown They had 3 Children: Aurella (died young), Emma and Elizabeth J. Elizabeth J married Patrick Holden. Patrick arrived in 1872, I think from Callen, Kilkenny--they had 10 children, 5 who lived to adulthood, 1 who died as a teen, 4 died as toddlers or infants. Edward (died), Elizabeth T (to James Godsill), Joseph, James, Francis (died as a teen), Edward (lived) and Loretta, and 3 other infants.

My maternal grandmother, Geraldine Elizabeth Godsill married Clyde Pruett (from several generations of Irish in Alabama & the Carolinas).

On my father's side is the McNeil(l) family -- immigrating Ireland to Nova Scotia/Quebec in the late 1700-early 1800s, then to the US midwest (Wisconsin) in the mid 1800s. There were a LOT of Canadian Scot McNeils from the same region of Canada, and in the same part of Wisc., but a few Irish, with the same spelling and the same family names: Peter, Anna, Margaret (or Anna Margaret) and Mayme or Mamie. The records are often attached to the wrong family trees, and DNA testing may be the only way to sort it all out -- but I'm looking for an Irish connection because the Scottish line is just too watered down to fit within the right historical lineage.

If anyone uses gedmatch.com -and understands it (i just can't wrap my head around it) my gedmatch ID is A001391

Thank you! and Peace

Dear Sky:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome!

That is great that you have tested your DNA and have uploaded it to gedmatch where you are likely to avail of the widest group of matches.

Do you have any more information about Elizabeth Lynch who arrived into the US in 1850?  Her date of death, where she is buried, a death certificate?  Any further information would be a great help and you can start from there to try to determine a possible county or even a parish.

As to your DNA matches, there is a lot that you can do with gedmatch to try to narrow them down.  If you have other relatives (known) who have taken the test, that will further assist your search.

If you have any further questions or information, please contact us with it and we will do our best to assist.

Kind regards,

Jane.

Hello Jane!  My apologies for such a dreadful long time in replying  -I lost you in a sea of search pages!

As for whether I have more info on my 3G gm, Elizabeth (unknown maiden named) Lynch, this is all I have:

arrived in the US (presumably NY) c1850

Per US Federal Census for White Plains, NY, she was by then a widow, living with 2 (of 3) children: Edward, age 19, and Lizzie, age 16.  (Per Ancestry DNA matching, I found one matching descendent to Edward, with supporting documentation, incl newsclips & vital records, which negate kinship to the previously named children, Aurella/Orella and Emma Lynch).

She's not found living with or nearby her children in any *verified* record until the 1900 US Federal census for White Plains, NY, where it's verified that only 2 of her 3 children are still living (the 3rd child's name, gender, dob, death, etc, are unknown). She is still listed as having been born c 1825 in Ireland.

Various census records between 1905-1915 list her living either with her daughter's family (Holden) in White Plains, NY, or with her son & blacksmith, Edward Lynch & family, in Stamford, co Fairfield, Connecticut.

Her death certificate says she died at the age of 96, from a fall down stairs (head injury) while living with her daughter, Elizabeth Holden, in White Plains, New York.

Her mother's name is recorded (as reported by her daughter) as Mary Morgan, and her father's name is recorded as Peter LIBBIN (huh????)

I believe her father's surname is a gross misspelling, but it's the only record I've found that offered a paternal surname for Elizabeth. I have a copy of the record, and yes, it very clearly shows as "Libbin" --and yes, I've spent literal YEARS going down rabbit holes of research into any surname that even remotely sounds like Libbin, trying to connect a child Elizabeth, dob abt 1825 with parents Mary Morgan (incl Gaelick roots & alternative spelling) and Peter (Petrum, Petri, Patrick, etc) LIBBIN/Gibbin/Gribben.Luffin/Lephin/Griffin/Fibbin/McGibben/etc/etc/etc/100+etc).

And I've gone down innumerable rabbit holes of Elizabeths marrying a Lynch male, btwn 1840-1851, from available online records of Ireland and NI, as well as Liverpool & Scotland --I found several possibilities, but couldn't match any that immediately set sail for the US. Nor could I find a Lynch male who had only 3 children (Ed & Lizzie dob in NY, 3rd is unknown) with an Elizabeth/Lizzie wife, who then died before 1870.    Civil war? Consumption or TB hospital? other?

yes...it's been very frustrating, to say the least!

Post mortum, her daughter, Elizabeth Holden, noted both her parents as having been born in Northern Ireland (vs Irish Free State) in the 1925 NY census & 1930 US Fed census records ...and sure, I've found some Elizabeths who married a Lynch male, but the financial cost demanded, to buy the NI records -on the hopes that one might be the right one-- is just too much for me. I don't know which county or parish, and I can't even be sure her daughter, Elizabeth Holden, provided the right information.

Any help you might offer will be deeply appreciated & valued.

In Peace,

Sky
