Kilbrogan baptisms 1820-1826 — HORNIBROOK / BURCHILL — NAI microfilm lookup

CorkKilbrogan (Cork)

KILBROGAN PARISH, BANDON, CO. CORK — lookup request, Church of Ireland baptisms 1820-1826

I'm in Idaho, USA, researching the family of EDWARD HORNIBROOK and FRANCES BURCHILL, who married at Christ Church, Kilbrogan, on 22 August 1820 by banns, and emigrated to Wolford Township, Grenville County, Ontario in 1826. I would be enormously grateful to anyone who can reach the National Archives Reading Room in Dublin.

WHAT I AM ASKING FOR

The Kilbrogan Church of Ireland baptism register, NAI microfilm MFCI 29 and MFCI 31 (RCB Library Ms. P.144/1/1-3), for the years 1820 to 1826 only. Seven years.

Edward and Frances had three daughters in Ireland before they sailed:

ELIZABETH HORNIBROOK, born 1820

ALICE HORNIBROOK, born about 1821

MARY HORNIBROOK, born 2 December 1823

What I need from each entry is the full wording, and above all the FATHER'S RESIDENCE OR TOWNLAND and the names of any SPONSORS. A photograph of the page would be ideal; a careful transcription would be very welcome.

WHY IT MATTERS

Edward Hornibrook was born about 1791, from his stated age of 60 in the January 1852 census of Wolford Township. His parents are said by family testimony recorded in 1989 to have been JOHN HORNIBROOK and ALICE GOOD of a crossroads near Bandon, but no document has ever been found naming them. Kilbrogan's baptism register has a gap around 1790-1795 which swallows Edward's own baptism, so he cannot be linked upward that way.

His daughters' baptisms are the way in. If one of those entries records Edward's townland, it places the household on specific ground. I have already found an Edward Hornibrooke holding seven acres at plot 4, KNOCKBROGAN, from Henry Belcher, Esq., in Griffith's Valuation of 1851, on the old Cork road at Kilbrogan Cross. If the 1820s baptisms name Knockbrogan, the connection is made.

WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN SEARCHED, so nobody repeats it

A professional search by Eneclann in 2003 covered Kilbrogan baptisms for 1764-67, 1775-84 and 1790-1810, and Kilbrogan marriages for 1754-1770 and 1785-1835. It also covered Ballymodan baptisms 1760-1780 and 1790-1810. The years 1810-1826 have never been searched by anyone, which is why I am asking for exactly that window.

ANY OTHER HORNIBROOK OR BURCHILL ENTRY in those seven years would also be very welcome, particularly any naming a JOHN, HENRY or WILLIAM Hornibrook, or a JOHN or SAMUEL Burchill.

I am happy to return the favour — I hold a large body of Canadian and American records for the Bandon families who emigrated to Merrickville, Ontario in 1826, including Hornibrook, Burchill, Maloney, Good and Dwyer, and I would be glad to share them with anyone tracing those names from the Irish end.

Also seeking contact with any descendant of the Bandon Hornibrook or Burchill families — I hold substantial Canadian, American and Australian records for those who emigrated.

Cheers,

Nathan Pyles

There were several Hornibrooks listed as head of household in the Tithe Applotment Books in Cork (from Ancestry). Townlands are given. Some were in Kilbrogan.

Lissaphooca Cross Roads: Situated approximately 3 km outside Bandon.

Irish Town Crossroads: A historical street/junction name noted within Bandon.

Scrahane Cross Roads: A small rural locality situated within the Bandon–Kinsale municipal district.

Crossbarry / Russelhill Junctions: Prominent nearby rural crossroads east of Bandon featuring historical landmarks like the former Crossroads Bar.

I hope this helps!

Nathan,

When a person appears in Griffith's  with land only--no house--it means he rented or owned a plot of land, but he did not have a taxable residence on that land. He likely lived in a nearby townland. So in the instance of Edward renting from Belcher, he rented land only and there was no house. The townland of residence would be given on the children's baptismal records--if a residence was recorded--not the townland where land alone was rented. I hope this is helpful.

The format of early Church of Ireland Baptism registers varies a bit, from free format registers to several pre-printed register layouts - in general the information included date of baptism, child's name, father's first-name and surname, usually mother's first name (but not always), some registers include date of birth and possibly father's trade or occupation, and sometimes a location - generally a town or parish, the name of the officiating minister may also be included. I have not come across witnesses/godparents listed on CofI baptisms.

Some examples below (from Co. Kerry and Dublin City CofI parishes) :
