DUGGANS OF CO. CORK

Cork

Hi

My maternal Uncle is 88 years old and the last of his siblings. For over twenty years we have been trying to find the birth records of his Grandfather Patrick Duggan, without success. The earliest we can trace him is 1901 in Coatbridge, Scotland as patrick Dugon, Tube Work Labourer age 23, birth place England. He marries in 1905 Coatbridge, Scotland at the age of 28 dies in 1913 in Coatbridge, Scotland at the age of 35. Therefore we presume his birth date to be in the region of 1877. My Uncle seems to have a few matches that lead to Duggans in Cork, but how do I bridge the gap. I have exhausted all the Patrick Duggans in England, they don't have the right parents or don't have the right dates. Both his Marriage and Death cert state his parents are John Duggan and Annie McAvoy. Other than a Death Cert for his Father John Duggan in 1891 Coatbridge, Scotland as the widower of Annie McAvoy, but no parents are listed. I cannot find a marriage cert for them or a death cert for Annie. Everything is speculation and so frustrating. However, we are getting DNA matches to a Michael Duggan, 1773-1855 Kanturk, Cork through two of his sons Timothy 1807 and Daniel 1817, now they have a brother Patrick 1821 which would be the right age to be a grandfather of my Patrick but I don't see him having a son John c 1841 and this Patrick went to Canada and got married but whether he Fathered John 1841 before he went is pure speculation on my part. If there is anyone who can help in the Kanturk area, I would be eternally grateful. Many thanks Margaret

MDS,

I saw your Ancestry tree with the 1901 and 1911 Scottish census that show he was born in England. Why are you trying to find his birth in Ireland? You have probably seen these Ancestry records that show a Patrick Duggan born in 1877 in Ince, Wigan, Lancashire, England; and the two subsequent England (1881 & 1891) that show him living in Ince with his parents John and Sarah Ann Duggan. Is this a different Patrick?

Regards,

Carolyn

Hello Carolyn,

I have exhausted my search of English Patrick Duggans with various spellings over the last 20-30 years.  Now that DNA is showing links to Duggans in Cork, I am trying to find the missing link in an attempt to find Patrick's birth. His parents marriage and his mother's death.

There is also a Patrick Duggan born in Cockermouth but that is not him either.

The Patrick you refer to, is not the Patrick I am looking for.  I too, at first, thought it was a possibility  but Sarah Ann's maiden name is not McAvoy, also this Patrick is still in Lancashire in 1901, my Patrick is already in Scotland in 1901.

I appreciate, the suggestion but I have been up against this brick wall for years and just hoping beyond hope that someone with more experience can shed some light on the links to Cork.

Mary Thanks

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Not to beat a dead horse as they say, but do you think the fact that Patrick reported he was born in England in both Scottish census records is an error? Why would he give that information if it was not accurate? I have searched irishgenealogy.ie and a bit in Roots Ireland, but see no birth record for Patrick in Ireland. Your DNA matches to Kanturk, Cork could go back many generations...even before those names you mentioned.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Again,

Just thought I would add this bit...using the birth record for John Duggan (1841) that you have on your tree, I looked it up on the paid site Roots Ireland, which I believe has the correct translation. It could be that this is NOT your John Duggan, but here are the details of his parents, their marriage, and his four siblings.

John Duggan, 18 Jul 1841, residence "Kilclony" (aka Kilclooney), RC parish of Kildorrey, parents - Patrick Duggan & Johanna HANLY.

Patrick Duggan & Johanna Hanly marriage - 20 Feb 1827, her residence given as Greige, RC parish of Kildorrery, witnesses - John Hanly & Patrick Hanly

John's siblings: Mary Duggin, 13 Dec 1827, parents - Patrick Duggin & Johanna Hanly

James Duggin, 2 May 1830, parents - Patrick Duggin & Johanna Hanly

Elizabeth Duggan, 10 Dec 1832, parents - Patrick Duggan & Johanna Hanly

Elizabeth Duggan, 1 Jan 1835, parents - Patrick Duggan & Johanna Hanly

All the residences were given as Kilclooney - that town land is on the border with Limerick, and is not near the RC parish of Kanturk, Cork.

I think that the Patrick Duggan emigrating to Canada on your tree is a different person. THIS Patrick Duggan married in 1827, and the one in Canada was born around 1821.

All of this still doesn't help you with figuring out Patrick Duggan's (1877) birth place!

Regards,

Carolyn
