Catherine/Kate Driscoll

Cork

Trying to find a birth record for my GGM, Catherine Driscoll. She married William Bubb in Schull, Cork on 27/9/1883 (aged 20) and came to England shortly after. Her father is named as Eugene, and I believe her mother was Annie. 1939 register gives her DoB as 2/4/1864. I have found a marriage record for Eugene Driscoll and Anne Base (23/1/1864) but want to be sure they are Catherine's parents. And did she have any siblings? Any help much appreciated.

Elaine,

On the free site irishgenealogy.ie under the church records tab, I found Driscoll baptisms with the father's name Eugene and mother's name as Ellen, not Anne. Here is the information:

Catherine Driscoll, 7 Mar 1858, parents- Eugene Driscoll & Ellen Cunningham, RC parish of Schull East, sponsors - Daniel Driscol, & Mary Cunningham (Catharine was older than thought)

Mary Driscoll, 8 Feb 1852, parents- Eugene Driscoll & Ellen Cunningham, RC parish of Schull East, sponsors - Peter Driscoll & Honora Cunningham,

John Driscole, 13 May 1854, parents - Eugene Driscole & Ellen Cunningham, RC parish of Schull East, sponsors - Timothy Sullivan & Johanne Sweeny

Marriage record - Owen (same name as Eugene) Driscoll & Ellen Cunningham, 4 Mar 1851, Schull East, witnesses - John Driscoll & John Cunningham

I just also found the marriage record that you mentioned for Eugene to Nancy (another name for Anne) Base in 1864, however; I did not find any children for them. I wonder if Eugene married Nancy (Anne) after the death of Ellen?? It's a possibility. Marriage was also in Schull East parish.

Regards,

Carolyn

Based on Carolyn's research, I tried to find a conclusive record of Ellen's death or a record showing Eugene was a widower when he married Ann/ Nancy Base. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything but Carolyn's suggestion makes sense. Have you checked out censuses in England that might suggest another birthdate for Catherine?

You might have I copied some records from Ancestry

There is a tree on Ancestry that the Catherine born in 1858 to Eugene and Ellen married Patrick Leahy in 1875 at home. Eugene, father name John, died in 1887 and Ellen died in 1913. Furtther research needed.

Carolyn and Mary - thank you both so much for your responses and for taking the time to look into this for me. It's so helpful to have fresh pairs of eyes on the case, and new avenues to explore.

I've revisited the information I have for Kate. The 1939 register gives her DoB as 2/4/1864. If correct, this would mean she was 19, not 20, when she married Wm Bubb on 27/9/1883. Not far out, but the fact it doesn't say 'Full age' suggests to me she was under 21 when she married (his age is given as 'Full'). So I'm inclined to think she was born around 1863/1864. Her youngest child (my GF) was born in Aug 1906, so if she was born in 1858, that would have made her 48 when she had my GF. Not impossible, but unlikely?

That said, the 1891 census has her as 32 (i.e. born 1859); the 1901 census has her as 39 (i.e. born 1862); the 1911 census has her as 45 (i.e. born 1866); and the 1921 census, taken on 19/6/1921, has her as 57 years and 2 months (i.e. born 1864). She died in March 1949, with her age given as 86 (i.e. born 1863). I'm inclined to go with the 1921, 1939 and death cert information, which ties in with her being born in 1863/1864 - but am happy to be persuaded otherwise!

As regards her mother (or possibly step-mother), the 1891 census shows Ann Driscoll ('Mother') living with Kate and her husband in England. It says she is married; and gives her age as 70 (i.e. born 1821)

The 1901 census also shows 'Annie Driscoll', 'Mother' living with the now widowed Kate and her family in England. But gives her age again as 70 (i.e. born 1831). Interestingly, Annie is now listed as being 'Widowed'. I've found a possible death cert for Annie Driscoll, which says she died in June 1908 aged 88 (i.e. born 1820) but has no info regarding a husband.

I'll revisit this all in the next day or so, but thank you both again for your suggestions. If you've stuck with me this far in this message, any further advice or ideas would be much appreciated!

Elaine

p.s. If it helps tie things down any further, Kate Driscoll's residence at time of her marriage in 1883 is Gubbeen, Schull.

Elaine,

I just looked at the marriage record to William Bubb, and noticed they were married in the COI. All the baptism records I listed are for a RC parish, so unless she changed faiths to the COI upon marriage, the records I provided might not be correct. There are only RC records (Cork & Ross) on that tab for Cork.

Regards,

Carolyn

Elaine,

Eugene Driscoll and Ann Base were also married in the RC church. I have checked Ancestry and have not found any additional clues.

I searched for a marriage record for Ann's possible parents, William Base and Margaret Halnane (tried Hallahan as well) and didn't find anything.

I found this record on Griffith Valuation

Many thanks again to you both. Although I haven't yet found the answers, it's increased my knowledge and given me some possible new avenues to explore.

Not to be insulting, but you do know that Catharine's father might possibly appear as Owen, Eugene being the Anglicized (and Latinized) version of Eoghan/Owen? Just another small detail that might help somewhere along the line.

I descend from Driscolls from Dunmanway, Cork. Searching for them has been a challenge. They seem to prefer a very small, elite selection of names which they repeat over and over again in each generation. Drives me crazy!
