Anna Maria Bell b 1836, county cork

Cork

Hi,

I am trying to find records for my 2 x ggmother Anna Maria Bell b 1837, County Cork.

She immigrated to Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1855 on the ship 'Australia' as a domestic servant.

On her Marriage certificates (2), South Australia she gives varying names for her father.

The first to Frederick Parker she gives her father as Patrick Bell

On her 2nd marriage to Peter Handrickan she gives her father as George Bell.

I have been unable to find any connection for my 2 x ggmother in Ireland.

Kindest Regards,

Pam Eustice.   South Australia

Re: Bell

Hi Pam,

The only record I can find is that from a Mary Anne Bell baptised 2 Jan 1837 in Relaghan, Drumgoon Co.Cavan, father George Bell mother Ann McCullen.

No Anne Maria or Anna Maria Bell found in Cork. Are you sure that the girl who maried Frederick and later Peter are one and the same person?, it is strange to give to different names for the father on the marriage record.

Hi Anne-Marie,

I have copies of the 2 South Australian marriages for Anna Maria BELL,

The first in 1858 of Anna Maria BELL, aged 22 years, to Frederic Parker (Father John Parker)

the second in 1867 of Anne Parker, widow, aged 30 years) to Peter HANDRAKIN (Father Garrett Handrakin).

On both she gives her signature as an X.

Both husbands were seamen and both drowned.

In an interview in the Register ( newspaper South Australia, Aug. 1928) she gives her birth as County Cork,December 1936, and as having married  the 2 men above.

The 2 different christian names on the different certificates were registered on her marriage certificates. (South Australia).

There is a George Bell who is  a soldier in the 94th Regiment of the English army in 1836, I wonder if that could be the reason we can not find her birth, English military births are not registered all the time in the normal church records.

No Anna Maria to be found anywhere in Cork or elsewhere

Thankyou Anne Marie.

What would be the reason behind an Irish RC being a soldier in the English army?

According to her interviews with the Register, 1st Aug, 1928, titled 'Pioneer Dead' and 'Contentment and Longevity' she says she was born at Cork, Ireland in December 1836 and came to South Australia, unaccompanied, at age 19, in 1858 on the ship 'Australia'.

I have searched for her Immigration but there is no record of her being on that ship.

The South Australian Maritime Museum say she may have gone to another state prior to coming here, so there would be no records of her landing in South Australia.

Hi Pam,

I have searched the ships lists too and noticed that the ''Australia'' sailed in 1856 and not in 1855, but even then no Anna Maria onboard.

Many Irish joined the English army, it was a way to live and have food, this was the middle of the Irish famine many Irish died, so the joining the English army was a ticket out. BTW Bell is not necesssarily an Irish name, Bell is an English name.

It can still be correct that she was born in Dec 1836 in Cork, many baptism records got lost or even never existed in the first place.

Hi Liz,

Handwritten in my article on 'Pioneers Recollections' , Register 1928 ( by family) the date of Dec 27 is added as an addition, for her birth date..

Where this date came from I have no idea. There is a really bad photo of her as well.  Need to re-visit the SA state Library after Xmas.

An old friend Mrs M Fitzgerald from WA is also mentioned as is a grandson who had been at sea f

or 14 years as returning for her funeral, Aug 1928.

She is the earliest ancestor I can go back to on my maternal side, so cannot connect my past in any way to Ieland.

Kindest Regards,

Pam

Thanks Pam. Yes I saw the article on the Trove site. Do you use Trove? So much information! Liz

I do try to use Trove, but have a lot to learn about negotiating the site.  One day I love it, the next day it frustrates me.

Don't suppose you have any family photos to share?

Hi Liz,

I am unable to access your tree on Ancestry anymore.

We changed the subscription to be in my husbands name to save a few dollars.  Regret it sincerely.

Our subscription is now for

jimeust@gmail.com

Would you mind giving me permission again to access your tree.

I beleive you have added some info recently about the ship 'Australia' arriving in Port Adelaide.  Unfortunately, I cannot access it.

Kindest Regards,

Pam
