Magners of Mallow, Cork.

Mallow (Cork)

GG grandfather John Magner was born in Mallow between 1830 and 1834. His age at death in 1875 was stated as 42. He and GG grandmother Elizabeth McSweeney married in Manchester, Lancashire in 1852. They had at least 5 children in England: Mary Ellen 1853, Thomas 1857, Michael 1858, John Edward 1860, Margaret 1861, Catherine born on voyage to Australia, and G grandmother Elizabeth in Sydney in 1869.

John stated in the passenger records to Australia in 1863 that his parents were Thomas Magner (dead) and Mary (or Margaret) Sullivan (dead).

Elzabeth states her parents were: Edward McSweeney (dead) and Mary (no surname some believe it is Carty, dead). She was also apparently born in Mallow.

The family was sponsored to Australia by John's brother Michael. No other siblings are known. Michael died in Sydney in 1890 with age as stated by his son Thomas as 74, so would mean his birth was around 1816. He married Catherine Mullane in 1855 in Mallow before emigrating to Australia in about 1858. Catherine died 1890 aged 64.

I have tried looking for birth records in the Catholic Church registers, as they were Catholics, and Thomas and Mary's marriage with no success. I was only able to find Michael and Catherine's marriage.

I have looked in the Virtual Records but unable to find my branch. There were several Magners around Mallow especially Ballyhooley? but other than that have not had success with any of the names: Magner, McSweeney, Mary Sullivan.

I would appreciate any help to trace them that you are able to provide.

Regards, Susan.

Susan, just in case you don't know this, there are over 90 public trees on Ancestry that include John Magner.

Yes there are a lot of trees on Ancestry but none have gone back further in the trees and have different families mixed in. It would be nice to know how many siblings in John's family, who the parents were on both John's and Elizabeth's sides and to find birth and death dates for everyone. Also how far back are records available for all the families...So much history but difficult to find!
