Driscoll of Kilbonane

Thank you very much for your much query to Ireland Reaching Out. What a wonderful photograph! Really amazing to put a face to a name. You have done really well to have the information you have. This will help to speed up your search for your ancestors.

You know the name of the ship he emigrated on -Spring.  Do you know the port he landed at in the US? If you do, very often the details were left a the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. You know that he was a tailor. You could try searching these trade directories for more information:

• 1812 John Connor, Cork Directory. Also 1817, 1826, 1828. NLI Pos 3985
• 1820 J. Pigot, Commercial Directory of Ireland
• 1824 J. Pigot and Co., City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory, NLI

Did you try writing to the parish priest of the area? He might have more information in church registers for you.

Also try the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). These land records might reveal more details about John and his family.

Try contacting Cork County Library for possible information about school records.

Thank you for the response and the leads. I was very luck with my GGGrandfather inasmuch as he opened an account with the Emigrant Savings Bank in Brooklyn, NY. They have online records of these accounts, mostly Irish immigrants, that have details like where they were from and to whom they are married. From this I learned the name of the ship and was able to get the ship manifest.

When my wife and I were in Ireland in 2007, Father O'Sullivan from Kilmurry Parish went through the books of the parish and found two possible relative's baptisms. Unfortunately, in the 1830's there were no RC Catholic Churches in the area, so I don't know where to go from here. We did travel to Dublin in 2009 and I went to the Library and the Archives with no sure results.

I am going to try to get the directories you spoke of. I have found two Driscolls in Griffith's Valuation, one in Rathfelane and one in Cloghduff, but again I don't know how to tie them to my family.

I guess I should be happy that he wasn't from Skibbereen.

I am researching my friend's family The O'Driscoll ; and can go back pre 1846; We know that they came from Cannavee which is near Macroom; In the Records you have the  Parish of Kilmurry, Moviddy, Kilbonane and Canavee; If you check www.irishgeneology.ie you will find 5 baptism's for the Children of James Driscoll and Julia Murphy Patrick 1846, Ellen 1850, Michael, 1853 and Jane 1848 and Daniel born 1843 is my friends Great-grandfather;

There may have been others in the family, but these are all  that we can find in the Irish records. When we checked O'Keeffe in the library, I found the marriage of Daniel of 1843, which took place on Feb. 13, 1872 in the parish of Kilmichael and it said he was a Dairyman; which means he was a farmer who milked cows;

The O'Driscolls have very strong features and if you have any other photographs which you may like to upload, we will certainly try and see if their is a likeness to the present generation; You may have other research which you may like to share and we will do our utmost to help if possible;

Since we last spoke I have finished the O'Driscoll Family History for an upcoming 80th Birthday,and wondering have you found anything else? There is a tombstone inscription which was given to me by a member of the family; Over the years it was suggested that a family of Driscoll referred to as ..The Top of the Hill were not related to my friends ancestors but it turns out that they are buried in the same grave; I can only confirm the marriage of James Driscoll and Jude Murphy 1837, and the witness for husband was John Driscoll; and the dates of the children I gave you; We have privately put together in a book containing the decendants of James and Jude up to 2013. I also know that James' mother was Ellen but we can't find his father, as she must have  been a widow in griffiths valuation. If you find anything which you think maybe  connected to Cannaway, Kilmichael let me know and I will look and see what I can find.

Hi Mary,

I have not found anymore on my side of the Driscolls. As a matter of fact I may have found information that disproves one of my links. But I have sent in my DNA for testing. When I receive the results, they will be posted on the Driscolls of Cork website. I still have to go there and enter John H. Driscoll born 1824 in Kilbonane on the group list. Hopefully that may give me some leads.

Do you still have the photograph of John Driscoll (b 1824) that you included in the original post? He’s my third great-grandfather. Both my dad & brother share a name with this distant relative, John H Driscoll. Could be fun to share this image with my family.
