Looking for living relatives of Jeremiah Regan/Johanna Harrington

Kilmocomoge (Cork)Caheragh (Cork)

Hello!

I'm looking for living descendants of my great-great grandparents Jeremiah Regan (parents Patrick Regan and Catherine Collins) and Johanna Harrington (parents John Harrington and Johanna Cremeen).

Johanna had 13 children, the oldest was my great-grandmother Ellen Teresa Regan (sometimes referred to as Nellie). She moved to Portsmouth, NH USA in 1898 around 20 years old so I'm not sure where she lived before then.

The 1901 census puts the family in Glanatnaw, the 1911 census puts them in Derryginagh Middle. It looks like Johanna's mother (Johanna oddly enough) lived with the family for some time. I put both their civil parishes below.

I do know that some of the Regan's moved to New Zealand and Australia, so not sure if much of the family remains in Cork. I already plan on visiting both areas so any info is very helpful at this point!

I'll be visiting for a week in early February (coming up quickly) and I will be in the Leap-Bantry area February 2 - 8. I do have an appointment at EPIC in Dublin and maybe I may find some new areas, I'm fairly certain these are the areas I want to visit.

Any info is a great help! I'm trying to honor a wish of my mother's that we learn more about our heritage in Ireland.

Kate,

Two of Ellen's siblings between 1879-1881 were born in Caharagh.

Kate,

I found this passenger record on Ancestry, maybe your Ellen. Did Ellen get married when she moved to New Hampshire? If so, when, where, and to whom?

The original record notes she was heading to Boston to work as a servant. Her Aunt Mary Harrington, Gardner Road, Brookline was her contact as well as she paid her passage. I will see if Johanna Harrington had a sister Mary.

Kate,

James Sullivan was born in 1903. His parents were Jeremiah Sullivan and Bridget Regan. They were married in Bantry in 1903. Not sure why James was living with his grandparents?

To discover who stayed in Cork using the names on the1911 census, you might search death records on Irishgenealogy Welcome to Irish Genealogy - Irish Genealogy Civil Record Tab. You might also search if Katie and Annie got married (new surname) or the other sons and whether they had children.

Mary, what amazing work that is! You are an angel, thank you so much.

Ellen did get married in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. First marriage was to Francis Flanagan, they had five children and he passed. She remarried Michael Murphy and had two children.

When I was a young girl we would go visit the Flanagans/Murphys in New Hampshire, so I know more about Francis Flanagan than Michael Murphy. Michael was born in Cork but beyond that I think his father’s name was Stephen Murphy. And nothing really beyond that.

I have some US census records that show Michael as a stepfather to the five kids plus his two children. One of whom was my grandmother Julia.

I did see a passenger manifest for her journey over, but did not know she was a servant for her aunt. So that is new, helpful information. I had wondered the context of the other passengers.

I’m going to go back over my notes (and I have a newly found Australian cousin who has even better notes) and see if I can answer some of your other questions. Thank you again! I’m looking forward to adding some of those notes to mine.

Kate:

I don't know if we can have a volunteer available with your trip about ten days away but please complete our Meet and Greet form https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

Thanks!

Hi Roger!

I had filled out a form, and I totally understand the short notice! I had just found the site yesterday, wish I had found it sooner! I will probably be able to manage in the area on my own if needed. I have to as I’m traveling alone. I will have an auto rental to explore and whatever I find I’m sure will be great and I’ll have a wonderful time.

If it doesn’t work out, it’s alright, I plan on visiting again. I have another branch of irish descendants on my father’s side but have even less information on them. This trip’s main purpose is to spread a portion of my mother’s ashes out in the Bay of Bantry, I’m just doing to some family related sightseeing while I am there.

This is an amazing resource you all run here and I’ll be sure to forward friends and family on a similar journey to you. :)

Kate,

Mary Harrington was not necessarily Ellen's employer. She paid her passage and was her contact in the USA.

Hi Mary! That makes a lot more sense. Thank you for clarifying!
