Kilglass townland?

Kilmichael (Cork)

Hello, I am researching my 2X great grandparents, Jeremiah Cohalan/Cahalane who had a daughter Jone Cahalane in 1839 in Kilmichael Roman Catholic Church. Jone's mother was Jone Connor. The baptismal record listed the parents residence as Ardaninion which was probably the townland of Ardaneneen. While I can find Ardaneneen on a map, I can't find Kilglass where I see a Jerry Cahalane and Daniel Cahalane were listed in the 1834 Tithe Applotment. Question - can anyone send a link to a map showing where Kilglass townland is/was or clarify whether it was later incorporated into another townland?

Thanks!

Hi Colleen!

Townlands were not standardized until the 1851 census so many place names pre-1851 did not become a townland but were assumed into another townland.

Assuming Jeremiah Cahalane and Jerry Cahalane were the same person then I think we can assume that Kilglass was a place name that was absorbed into Ardaneneen townland.which is 614 acres in size. Unfortunately neither Jeremiah or Daniel Cahalane show up in the Griffiths Valuation of 1852 for Co. Cork so we can't confirm for sure.

Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for your reply.  As luck would have it, I found this information yesterday on the Kilmichael Parish Catholic Church site - http://www.kilmichael.org/hisoman.htm in an article titled “Transcript of Chapter on Kilmichael Parish from Jeremiah O'Mahony's WEST CORK PARISH HISTORIES AND PLACE-NAMES.”   In that article it said, "Greenville lies south of Ardaneneen. This is a translation of an older name, Kilglass the green church. The name Tullach Glass, the green hillock appears in title deeds of a landholder in this townland."

It's good news for me that Jerry/Jeremiah wasn’t there for the Griffiths because he emigrated w/his family in 1840 to New Brunswick.  So, the fact that he was listed in the 1834 Tithe for Killglass, had a daughter baptized in 1839, and then was gone is good news.  Fingers crossed I’ve found my 2X great grandfather, Jeremiah Coholan, but it’s early days!

Thanks, Colleen Kennedy
