Searching for Ancestors

I'm looking for the Fouhy's from Kildorrery.  My paternal grandmother was Ellen (Nellie) Fouhy and her parents were William Fouhy and Hanora McGrath.  Myself and my family are traveling to Ireland for the first time on July 8th and will be in Kildorrery on the 9th.  I have a picture of a gravesite where my Great Grandfather William Fouhy is buried along with his son Patrick and daughter Elizabeth.  William was born 11/23/1870 and died 2/18/1932.  I would love to be able to visit the gravesite when we are passing through Kildorrery but not sure where it is.  According to the 1901 Irish Census, they lived at House 5 in Scart, Kildorrery.  I would love to know if there are any known relatives still living in the area.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Also my Great Great Grandmother Margaret (Condon) Fouhy is apparently buried in St. Nathlash, Village of Rockmills and I would love to visit her grave as well.  Is that close to Kildorrery?

Hi Kathleen

There are still Fouhys living in Kildorrery so it is possible they are your relations.  We will make enquiries on your behalf and let you know if we can make any connection for you.  The Fouhys are probably buried in Kildorrery graveyard and Nathlash (Rockmills) graveyard is only about 1 mile from there.  We will get back to you as soon as we find out anything of interest.

I have further information for you but not all good.  I found the Fouhy headstone in Kildorrery graveyard.  It has a further addition of William's wife, Hanora and their son Jack who died in 1992.  I enquired from the oldest man in the locality and he remembers Hanora and knew Jack.  Jack was unmarried and was the last of that family.  He doubts that they were related to the other family of Fouhys as he never remembers them mixing as the older generations did with their relations.  I can identify the house that Jack Fouhy lived in - a small house, now unoccupied. 

I haven't been able to contact the other Fouhys yet as they are away until next week but I doubt if they would know much about Jack.  I also visited Rockmills graveyard -  not much information there.  Most of the graves are unmarked and of the ones that are there is only one Condon (by coincidence Margaret) which would seem to be a recent enough buriel but no date.   

I can meet you when you get to Kildorrery to direct you to the grave and Jack's house or if I'm not available, I can arrange for someone else to do so. In the meantime, I will see if I can unearth any more information.

Thanks once again for your prompt response.  This is an absolutely wonderful website!  I can't tell you how much I appreciate your research!  Your reply is very interesting indeed.  I was not aware that there was a Jack.  I know William and Hanora had the following children:  Ellen, Nora, Margaret, Patrick, Elizabeth and Jeramiah who have all passed on as well.  Although while doing some research I came across a document on Ancestry.com noting that my Great Grandmother Hanora came to New York City in 1946 to visit her children here in the states and on the document it listed a John as her next of kin in Ireland, so we could definitely have a match.  So unfortunate though that we didn't realized he was alive and living in Kildorrery until his death in 1992.  Great Great Grandmother Margaret (Condon) Fouhy was born in 1833 so I doubt the grave you found in Rockmills is hers if there was a recent burial.  I would love to meet with either you or anyone else who is available when we arrive in Kildorrery.  How should we go about setting that up?  We are taking a CIE tour and have our own tour bus so perhaps we could meet somewhere in the town?  I will not know our exact schedule until we arrive in Ireland but we are scheduled to land in Dublin on Monday, July 9th and traveling to Kildorrery on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 10th.  Please let me know what we can arrange.  Thank you!!

Could you possibly email me at brendahennessy1@eircom.com so that I can send you contact details.  How long do you think you will be stopping in Kildorrery.  In any case you will get to the graveyard as that won't take long but I would like to be able, time permitting, to take you to see Jack Fouhy's house.
