John Murphy and Catherine Clifford of Cloughleafin, Cork

Kildorrery (Cork)

I am looking for birth, marriage, and death (including gravesites) records for my gg grandparents, John Murphy and Catherine Clifford. They raised their family in Cloughleafin, Cork, Ballindangan Parish. They were Roman Catholic. Children- Honora 1843-1926 m. John Fogarty in Ballindangan, Bridget 1845-1936 m Thomas Shanahan in Australia, John 1847 m Mary O'Brien in Ballindangan, Johanna 1852, and Daniel 1854. I have birth records for all of the children. Honora was married in 1865 and John in 1875. Neither of their marriage records show John, their father, deceased.

In the Tithe Applotment, there was a John Murphy listed. Maybe John's father.

NameJohn Murphy

There was a Daniel Murphy (1809-1893) m. Margaret Hayes living in Cloughleafin. Maybe John's brother or cousin. They were godparents for each other's children.

Jane Clifford and Thomas Tobin lived across the street from each other in Cloughleafin. Clifford house is still being occupied. They were married in 1823 and moved to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. Jane might have been Catherine's aunt.

Any help finding more info on John and Catherine would be appreciated. I have checked RootsIreland. There is an 1859 marriage record for a John Murphy and Catherine Clifford in Cork on Ancestry but that would be too late. I do have a tree on Ancestry with records for most of their children and their families.

Thank you- Mary

Mary:

I've looked for death records but no good leads. There are some where the image is not available that are potential records. irishgenealogy.ie  has promised to add the images for deaths from 1864-1870 but funding issues must be holding up progress.

As you know there are two Cloghleafin townlands. one in Kilgullane parish and the other in Marshallstown parishs. Your family was from the Cloghleafin in Kilgullane. I tried to find 1901 census records for that townland but can only find records for the Cloghleafin in Marshallstown.

The other area to explore (if you have not already) is the Cancelled books showing the changes to the lessees after the 1852 Griffiths. Who took over the John Murphy lease in Cloghleafin/Kilgullane? Might give you a lead on when John died. Records are only available at the Valuation office in Dublin. Have you looked at this source?

Roger,

Thank you for your suggestions. I have to believe John died after 1873 but records I have looked at on Irishgenealogy don't seem promising. I will check out the cancelled books. I have a contact who might be able to help me access. Is there plan to put them online at some point?

Marriage of Hannah Murphy and John Lonergan 1882

Mary:

Yes, there is a plan to add the data online at some point. More than half of the 32 counties have been scanned. This is another project where funding issues have delayed completion. Ironically, PRONI has the cancelled books online for the six counties in Northern Ireland.

Thank you, Roger

Eileen, perhaps Hannah is Johanna that was born in 1852. Marriage age doesn't match her 1852 baptismal but Irish dates are always questionable.
