Catherine Woods

My great-grandfather named his farm in New Zealand Springvale.   His mother was Catherine Woods who said she came from Fermoy.   She gave the authorities various ages at different times but it seems she was born between 1818 and 1824.   She said her religion was Roman Catholic.

I am wondering if these two place names, that is, Springvale and Fermoy, suggest that Catherine was from the civil parish of Kildorrery.

Where should I look for the Woods family in Springvale and Kildorrery before 1848 when Catherine left Ireland?

Hi Eleanor,

Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has a baptism of a Catherine Woods on October 29th 1815 in the parish of Killavullen, Co. Cork. Parents: Patrick Woods and Joan Carroll.

Killavullen is situated between the towns of Mallow and Fermoy and South of the town of Kildorrery.

Springvale is in the Barony of Fermoy and the Poor Law Union of Mitchelstown. There is a house there which you can view on Google. The Civil parish is Kildorrery and the Catholic parish appears to be Farahy, Diocese of Cloyne.

It is possible that Catherine's father worked on the building of the house c1820 - 30 and it may be the reason that the farm in NZ was so named?.

Tithe records - 1825 - 1834 have a number of persons named "Woods /Wood "in the Fermoy area.
