John Collins and Hannah Griffin of Fermoy

Fermoy (Cork)

Good evening,

I'm researching the family of John Collins (born about 1866) and Hannah Griffin (born about 1867) of Fermoy, County Cork.

They were married on Feb 8 1891. According to the marriage record John Collin's father was also named John and Hannah's father was William Griffin.

They are on the 1901 Census living in Ballinahow (Spires), Glanworth East with their children John, William, and Thomas along with Father-in-Law William Griffin.

According to the Ireland 1911 Census, Hannah Collins, resided at 2 Spring Field Street in Fermoy, Cork, Ireland. She is indicated as being a widow, had 6 children born, 4 living, and was married for 20 years. The inferred Marriage Date was 1891 (this is consistent with the marriage record on file). Hannah was living with her 2 sons, Thomas Collins (age 11), Patrick Collins (age 10), and daughter Ellen (age 8).

There is a death register on file, indicating a Hanna Collins who died on August 24, 1920 at the age of 57 years. The record indicates that she was a widow of a laborer, and died as a result of Pneumonia. Her death was certified. Patrick Collins was present at her death at Devlin Street, Fermoy.

This is consistent with Hannah Collins will which indicates she was late of Devlin Street, Fermoy County Cork. P.R. Will 1920 Date of Grant 30 October 1920 Escort Daniel Gallagher - Fish Merchant

Any assistance would be very appreciated.

Brianna,

You seem to already have some good information. Can you tell the volunteers what exactly you would like to know so we can be of assistance?

Regards,

Carolyn

Brianna,

On the marriage record (below and which you have), the address for both John and Hannah is given as Ballinahown, Glanworth. There is no townland in the area called Ballinahown, but there is Ballinahown Cross. The townland is called Ballynahow, and Ballinahown Cross is in Ballynahow townland.

The only John Collins I could find in the area with a father John was born in Boulagh (Fermoy) in 1867. I don't know where Boulagh is, but am trying to find out. There is no townland called Boulagh.

Hannah Griffin seems to have been born Hanora in Farranlaheshery townland which is very close to Ballynahow (Ballinahown), where the family seem to have moved to.

I couldn't find any Griffin family in Farranlaheshery in Griffith's Valuation of 1852. The Valuation Office books, which are not available online, should give further information on when the family came to the townland. If I find where Boulagh is, I will find more about the Collins family.

It seems that John Collins died of pneumonia in 1903, aged 38, a few months before Ellen was born.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Best wishes, Kieran Jordan (Fermoy)
