Burial records for Castlehyde church

Fermoy (Cork)

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to locate the burial records for military funerals in Castlehyde church (Litter), near Fermoy. I know a little bit about the church and about some burials of English army officers who were buried there, but I wanted to have a better idea of just how many burials occurred over a period. That said, the year I'm interested in is 1813 and I was hoping to understand how many burials occurred in the months of April, May, and June of that year.

Does anyone know if burial records for this church exist? If so, can you point me towards them, please?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I was involved in editing a book on Castlehyde graveyard. For the book, we transcribed all the memorial transcriptions. Unfortunately, there are few written records of burials and the transcriptions are the best record of burials. The book will be available next week. There were 6 burials recorded in 1813. The month isn't always given, but I do know the month in some cases.  If you send me further details of what you are looking for, I can have a look at the memorial transcriptions.

Best wishes, Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Thanks for replying!

I am interested in learning if more people from the 84th Regiment of Foot died while they were stationed in Fermoy and were buried there before the Regiment travelled to the Iberian Peninsula to participate in the Napoleonic Wars. I know of at least two officer's burials that happened in 1813 (Ensign Samuel Lister and Major Horton), but I was wondering if there were others. They likely left Fermoy during the summer of that year, as they fought at the Battle of the Bidassoa in October of that year.

I'd be interested in having a look at this book too. Do you know if it'll be available from any retailer that ships to other European countries?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

All the best,

Marlene Oliveira.

Marlene,

Apart from those two, there is no other reference to the 84th. As you say, the 84th moved out shortly after Samuel and Richard Horton died, and I don't think that they were very long in Fermoy.

I will be looking after postage of the book. The book is €15 + postage (about €5 to Europe). If you are interested in a copy send me an email with your address to kjordan@irelandxo.com.

Best wishes, Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Thanks for confirming that those are the only mentions to the 84th. I'll follow up via email about the book.

All the best,

Marlene Oliveira.
