Alexander Hamilton - Soldier in Fermoy, at least 1894 - 1901

Fermoy (Cork)

I'm trying to find a death record for Alexander Hamilton, age 21 in 1894 when he married Nora O'Keeffe.  She is a widow by 1902 when she remarries, but cannot find a death record for her husband  There was a son Alexander Hamilton, who died at age 1 in 1898.

If he didn't die in Fermoy, where would a record of his death be kept?

Thanking you in advance,

Cathy Negrycz

Cathy,

I can find no burial record for Alexander in Kilcrumper cemetery in Fermoy, or in Beechfield cemetery. There is also a military burial ground but I don't have records for that. If you know the unit he was with they may have records. Army units generally have good records. If I find anything about the military burial ground records I will let you know.

Best wishes, Kieran Jordan (Fermoy)

Hi Cathy,

I have checked www.irishgenealogy.ie and subscription sites -  www.rootsireland.ie and www.findmypast.ie with negative results for a death of Alexander Hamilton, a Soldier. His late son - Alexander - is recorded on Irish Genealogy.

On his marriage certificate in 1894 his father is recorded a Weaver, no address.

Norah O'Keefe Hamilton is recorded in William Street, Fermoy in the 1901 census and residing with her mother, also a widow.

If you contact the Roman Catholic parish office in Fermoy they may have a record of his burial - info@fermoyparish.ie

Regards,

McCoy

Thank you all for your help.  I found a marriage record and they were married in the Presbyterian Church, although Norah was Catholic.  I believe I found his birth record from Co. Tyrone, but cannot find Military Records - I don't think he would have had a pension.  I will contact the R.C. parish just in case Norah had him buried in a R.C. cemetery, although I know that some cemeteries weren't just for one demonination.

Cathy,

Military Records go far beyond pensions. I think it is worth contacting the archives of the unit that Alexander was with (archive offices are generally in the UK). The archive offices very often have extensive records for their soldiers.

Best wishes Kieran
