Looking for Canty, Holahan near Bantry

Have you looked at irishgenealogy.ie , many of the church records from the mid 1800's are there. I am not sure if there are any Canty's in that townland still, but there certainly are in Bantry.

Thank you for taking the to help out. I am embarrassed to say I know nothing of the Canty family here in the USA, nor of the history and the way of life in Ireland, which is a sin in it's self. Hope you can make since of my ramblings.

Michael Canty after leaving New York moved to San Francisco. All the Canty's that were related lived in San Francisco at one time. There were other Canty's in San Francisco but I do not know if they were related. All the history I know of my family I got on line. I even learned of my brothers death 3 years prior. I actually found 5 family members (that I grew up around) deaths. My father did see his brothers from time to time and his Father. But as to his uncles, aunts, grandfather and great grandfather, although they all lived in the same town never visited that I knew of. So I never met them.

My father did tell me once that I was Irish and we came from Co Cork. The other tidbit of information he gave me was that at one time we had another part to our name. Like O' Canty, Mc Canty or Mac Canty. He didn't know just that we had more to the name. He also stated that we had to leave Ireland for horse steeling or something. I think that was to add a little drama or flavor as to why we migrated to the USA.

You may have uncovered something I would have passed up because not knowing the relationship. But by finding that record it introduced Maria Regan, Jerh Regan and Ellan Canty. Later in the 1800's we find a Mrs. Ellen Regan. I still don't know the relationship of all the party's but it is another piece of the puzzle.

Interesting to see your email. From Ancestry, my Great Great Great Great Grandfather is a Canty (Thomas) from Durruss (spelt Durress in records). Born about 1801 and had a son in London in 1823. Married a lady called Ann (no surname or birthdates given) but presumed also from Cork. The son (also Thomas) married a lady from Dublin called Mary Bennett. This throws no further light on your search, but intersting to swap stories. I don't know if you've tried Ancestry, but if you have names and dates of birth, even approximate ones, it's pretty good up to 1800 (free trial available) - but I think it's pot luck whether someone else has started to build a family tree. Whilst there aren't any record of Canty's in Killoveenoge in any of the Griffith's Valuation (1853), Tithe Applotment Books (~1830) or 1901/1911 censuses, there is reference to a John Canty renting in the neightbouring Clashadoo and Gearhameen townlands in 1853. He may be the one guy?? The Luke Canty in Clashadoo in 1901 may well be the same Luke with this baptismal record.

There is also a reference to a Lewis Conty [sic] in the 1830 TABs for Clashadoo...

You'll see a reference to the birth of a Jerh Canty, father Lewis, in 1812 here. I expect the townland is Gorteanish, Kilcrohane, which isn't too far away... You will see that be married Catherine Kelly who was born in 1822.

Might be something there.....

Using irishgenealogy.ie I have found records in Durrus mentioning Killoveenoge and some of my relitives. My gg grandfathers immediate family I believe was completely out of Ireland by 1848. The best records I have found still remain the New York Immigrant Bank Test Records through Ancestry. By looking up each person identified as Canty and reviewing the remarks section for each person I can eliminate some and identify others as family. The records mention family members within the remarks, where they came from and what ships they traveled on. There were about four different ways, whom ever wrote the information, spelled Killoveenoge and even then it was hard to read and the priest's in Durrus haven't done much better LOL.

I'm a Canty in the UK In an earlier post Frank Page mentioned Thomas Canty from Durrus.

This person is i believe my 5x grt grandfather.

He is shown in the census of 1851 at the age of 50. He was a visitor of a house in Greycoat street Westminster London.

His son Thomas is shown as being born 19th march 1823 in Westminster.

I do not know the full name of his wife only listed as Anne and his birth place as Durrus.

I would like to be able to definitively say that he is my ancestral link to Ireland but like you i'm having problems finding any documentation of his parents or siblings, when he left Ireland and when. 

It would great if our Canty familys are linked.

I am on Ancestry, I also had a Ancestry DNA test, I also have DNA test results on Gedmatch.com

I found my relative information through irishgenealogy.ie it was difficult because of the spelling differances between now and back then. In order to get information out you have to be creative. My Thomas Canty died in 1841 in Killoveenoge. His family left for the U.S. in the 1840's at different times, ships but they all left to my knowledege. 

My wife and I went to the Bantry area and stayed in a B & B. It is two mines South West of Bantry on the Sheeps Head Penensula.

Three miles from there is Killoveenoge. We met some very nice people there who tried to help us locate where my family lived. unfortunatelt 175 years can change an area. I have not given up but I'm not the best to find records.

Thanks for the information on the sheeps head.

As you know trying to find connection is a bit of a task as Canty's seemed to have left Ireland splitting some familys up with brothers, sisters and parents either going to the US or the UK finding documented links back is a bit of a task.
