Donovan births in RC parish of Drimoleague, Cork

Drimoleague (aka Dromdaleague) (Cork)

Hello,

From an 1899 will document in California, I know that Hanora Donovan Coakley mentioned three siblings, Timothy Donovan (1825 -1894) Margaret Donovan (1828-1898), Mary Donovan (1842-1921), and Mary's descendants as recipients of money. All four siblings emigrated to California. Additionally, she mentions a brother James Donovan (1841-1913) who remained in "Dromaleague County", Cork as another recipient. I believe that this is Dromdaleague civil parish, and the RC parish is Drimoleague.

I have scoured the Drimoleague (baptisms start in 1817) for the parents of these siblings, but cannot locate a couple that matches all the siblings.

Can anyone take a look? I have one lead that the father might be James, but not certain.

Gratefully,

Carolyn

I searched irishgenealogy.ie and focused on James Donovan. I searched for all James Donovans baptized in Drimoleague RC parish from 1838-1843. There were three records. I then took the mother's maiden name for all three records: Norry McCarthy, Catherine Collins and Kate Ronayne and looked for sibling baptismal records in Drimoleague parish from 1822-1843. I used the advanced feature where you can show the mother's name but the results were unhelpful.

James Donovan baptized June 13th 1839 mother Norry McCarthy- one record found Nelly Donovan

James Donovan baptized November 11 1841 mother Catherine Collins-one record Denis Donovan

James Donovan baptized September 14 1840 mother Kate Ronayne- three records Daniel. Patrick and Ellen (no matches to your family)

OnIine records for Wm. CoakIey give his pIace of origin in Cork as Dromore. In Dromore townIand in Caheragh parish in the Tithe AppIotment books there were three CoakIeys given as heads of househoId and a Timothy Donovan. Is it possibIe your Donovans came from Dromore as weII?

I then searched Cork baptisms at irishgenealogy.ie and found the following Dromore baptisms. The first three names are those of your ancestors, but the year you had for James is off. I could not find Hanora. I did find a Jeremiah, which is not a name you mentioned. It has not been proved that these are your ancestors, but you might keep them in mind as you continue researching.

Roger,

Thanks for taking a look at this...I found those exact same births for James, but the siblings did not work out.

Patricia,

William Coakley is my great great uncle from Dromore, Caheragh. His brother Michael was my  great great grandfather. I'm pretty certain that Wiilliam and Hanora Donovan married in California, so there is not necessarily a connection for her to Dromore. It is Hanora's will that mentions the folks from Dromdaleague....she also mentions a cousin named Mary Donohue whom she is leaving money to that I did not mention before. I am assuming that if those two individuals, her brother James and her cousin Mary, are from Dromdaleague, then they were from Drimoleague parish and not Caheragh. I don't think that folks moved around much in that era. Hanora's sister Mary also emigrated to the US and is mentioned in the will. I have not found any Jeremiah as her sibling.

I appreciate you both taking a look at this for me!

Regards,

Carolyn

Hello again,

I meant to ask this of both of you....ever since the irishgenealgy.ie updated their site, the advanced feature option has never worked for me. In the past, I  always used this feature to find siblings in a family, and it worked perfectly using parents' surnames only. I tested it using my own relations whose names I know, and all I get is "no results found, please try another search". The option to add another person in the record does not work either. I emailed them a while ago, but have not heard back. I thought it was a problem with my computer, but trying to search using my iphone does not work either.

Thanks for any help!

Carolyn

Yes, I have the same issue. Searching my mother's name did not work.

Carolyn:

My wife has gr gr grandparents from Cork city. The husband was Cornelius Cremen. I just searched for a marriage record for him and used the advanced option to choose a spouse and entered Bailey (maiden name of wife). I hit search and the 1830 marriage record popped up.

I also did a search for the baptismal record for Cornelius Cremen and used the Advanced option to add his mother's maiden name of Barrett and the search generated his 1805  baptismal record.

There may be a problem but my current experience shows no problem.

Keep in mind that DrimoIeague and Caheragh CahoIic parishes border on each other, so the reIationship is possibIe. But not proved! Good Iuck.
