Deasy family in Drimoleague

CorkDrimoleague (aka Dromdaleague) (Cork)

I am trying to figure out if my great great grandfather, Timothy Deasy, is from Drimoleague, Cork.

What I know about Timothy:

  1. Timothy Deasy was born sometime between 1826 to 1833  (from U.S.  documents)  At some point he emigrated to the US and married Ellen Lane in Massachusetts in 1859.
  2. Timothy and Ellen had 8 children born in CT. Julia,James,Ella,Minnie,Tim jr,Daniel,John, Annie.
  3. His father is Denis Deasy (from marriage doc)
  4. His mother is Julia.  In the 1860 US census she is living with Timothy in Middleton CT. She is listed as 56 yrs old so born in 1803.  I am assuming Denis has died.
  5. He has a sister, Ellen, also living in 1860 with Timothy in CT.

What I found:

Tim Deacy, bapitzed 12 December 1824 in Drimoleague, parents Denis Deacy and Julian Molony, sponsors Con Deacy and Mary Deacy.

I am thinking Julian is probably Julia?

Denis and Julian also had a daughter Ellen born in 1836.

They also had other children – Mary, Nora, and Cate.  I found the baptism certificate for them.

So the names seem to fit for the family.  Anyone have an idea of how I can confirm this is the right family?

Thanks in advance.  Lisa

Lisa,

I would be happy enough with that amount of information. Quit often, a best estimate is needed as records aren't always available for further proof.

At that time, Julian was a relatively common female name. As a hobby, I transcribe headstones and I come across the name Julian fairly regularly.

Best wishes, Kieran

Lisa,

This may be a red herring but... There are a number of Deasy / Dacy persons on my tree, mostly by marriage. The expert in this area is a cousin of mine descended from that line. If you wish I can connect you with her. email me at atsullivan0@gmail.com

Hi, Lisa.

Records in genealogy.ie list a marriage of Denis Leary from Drimoleague and Julian Moloney from Drinagh in the parish of Drimoleague (churches in Drimoleague and Drinagh) on 12th September 1818. You will find the entry here: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=a43df396a0-26680

However, I think that the original has been misinterpreted as can be been here, where I read it a Denis Deacy:

Looking at the births of the children that you mention, they occur in the townland of Bredagh (also called Bohernabredagh). Checking the church tithe applotment payments (1823) for Bredagh, there is an entry for 'Deacy & brother', paying tithes of £35-15-6, a huge sum per acre, suggesting that it was very good-quality land. Original listing is here:

https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587433/004587433_00043.pdf

A further link to Bredagh is that Kate (1843) and Mary (1844) gave it as their address as in the church marriage register.

The Griffith Valuations of 1847-53 have a Denis Deasy renting 43 acres of land at Bredagh/Bohernabredagh. Entry listed here:

There are no Deacys or Deasys in the area in the census of 1901 or 1911.

Dear Kieran,

Thank you so much for all this information! I agree - I think that is Denis and Julian's marriage certificate. This is all very helpful and very much appreciated. :)
