Looking for Cronins

CorkCloyne (Cork)

Greetings from the US.

My Great, great, great, great Grandfather John Cronin was born in Cloyne in 1806 (Christened Sept 15, 1806 at Slaveen in Cloyne Parish).  His father is shown as Jeremiah Cronin and I am trying to find birth records.  the only Jeremiah I have found thus far was born in 1793 in Mitchelstown but that seems too young and too far away from Cloyne to be his father.

I am hoping someone might have some records or advice.

John Cronin married Mary Catherine Coleman November 9, 1823 in Cloyne Parish and had 5 children:

Patrick, John, Margaret (died early), Elizabeth, and another Margaret.

Patrick is my ancestor and moved to the US and married Mary Hoolihan.

Hello Bill,

As you may know most of Irelands records  were destroyed in a fire in the fourcourts in 1922.  This means that all the census and other records no longer exsist.  Only parish records that were kept in local churchs survived.  Most catholic parishes started keeping birth and marriage records from around 1820 onwards (some as late as 1830). However in an area that was predominately protestant the records started around 1800 or 1790.  You're one of the lucky ones if you can trace your ancestors back further than 1800.

The only suggestion I can make is to look at the hearth rolls and house books but I dont know if these are online or not. 

I wish you well in your search, but I don't really know how much farther you can go back. Have you any idea what he did for a living? Maybe he is listed in Estate books or if he was protestant he may be listed in an almnac.

In Griffith's Valuation 1851-53 there was a John Cronin living in Bohillane - adjacent to Sleveen.

Possibly the brother of your ancestor Patrick?

 

If you are looking for parish records later than 1800 don't rule out nearby Ladysbridge as well as Cloyne.

Mallow Heritage should have copies of the RC Baptismal and Marriage Registers for the area including Cloyne and Ballymacoda-Ladysbridge.
