Timothy Lane of Towermore

Castlelyons (Cork)

Looking for any information on Timothy Lane who married Abina (Abbie) Fitzgerald sometime after 1948 who was born at Dovea, Thurles on 20 November 1906. He died at Towermore (House?), Fermoy, Co Cork on 9 April 1979. Probate granted to his widow Abina Lane; effects £310,450. She died 28 December 1981 in Rathgar, Co. Dublin and is buried in her parent’s plot in Glasnevin Cemetery, occupation given as wife of a civil servant. Abina's mother was Mary Anne nee St George of the St George Family of Tyrone House, Co Galway which is my connection. Any clues appreciated.

Hi, we do not answer queries on the site unless a 100 years has elapsed but a local Facebook group may be on Facebook and I often see the ones I am on looking for more recent people.

By chance I acquired a book on the St George family who founded Carrick On Shannon in County Leitirm (there is a Leitrim parish in Galway to add to the confusion) the book covers their

arrival from 1610 to 1848 and includes a family tree, they apparently came from a town of that name in Cambridgeshire. The small book is about €12 plus postage from the Maynooth Local History Series.

https://www.fourcourtspress.ie/books/2024/from-carrigdrumruske-to-carrick-on-shannon I am sure there were not too many families of that name.

Hi Pat, many thanks for the clarification about the 100 year rule. The original St George family came from Hatley St George and in old English hatley means the place or dwelling of St George. Even further back from Limoges in France. There is another book written by Robert O'Byrne "Tyrone House and the St George Family", commissioned by a cousin and has been available on Amazon. This branch of the family were the French Family of Co Galway, some times Ffrench, and had changed their name to St George in compliance with a settlement of Lord or Baron St George a grandfather. The first of the St George line of Tyrone was Arthur French St George. Both branches intermarried as the landed gentry did in those days.

My great grandmother was Harriet St George and her grandmother was Lady Harriet St Lawrence whose father was one of the Earls of Howth.

I will see if I can get the book you mentioned.

Again many thanks and greetings from a warm NZ summers day.

Brian
