Jerry McCarthy and family - Ballintemple, Cork, Co Cork

Ballintemple (Cork)Cork City (Cork)

Hi All,

This is further to a previous post I made. After lamenting my brick wall with family members, I was able to find more information than I thought we had!

My aunt told me that her grandmother told her that our McCarthy ancestors are from the area around Black Rock, Cork, Co Cork. Apparently, my great-grandmother tended to be right about these things...

From there I was able to find the baptism records for my many times great grandfather Jerry McCarthy, see below.

Baptism record for JERRY MCCARTHY on August 1803

Area - CORK & ROSS (RC), Parish/Church/Congregation - CORK - SOUTH PARISH

Name: Jerry Mccarthy

Address: Ballin Temple

Father: Pat Mccarthy

Mother: Mary Mccarthy

Sponsor 1: Jno Riordan

Sponsor 2: Nelly Cullnane

There is a baptism for a potential brother Thomas in 1805 (mother's maiden name Curran) and a marriage record for Patrick and Mary in 1802, both with the Ballintemple address.

I know Jerry had at least three children before he emigrated, those are Patrick 1836, Denis 1844 and Honora 1845. I am having trouble with finding there baptism records though. I know they are Roman Catholic, so the Cork South parish should be the right one. I have no idea who their mother was but by 1851 in Wales he had a 'wife' Mary and a son that he had with her in Wales (I've not found a marriage record). I was able to find Mary baptised in Cork too, in 1813 as Mary Nowls.

I'd appreciate help finding the baptism records for his children and possibly and emigration record if its not too much to hope for! Many thanks in advance.

Chelsea,

I believe that Jerry and Thomas are brothers because Thomas' record was transcribed incorrectly. If you look at the original image on irishgenealogy.ie for both children, the mother's surname is given as "Do" which is an abbreviation for "ditto" meaning her surname was McCarthy too. In Thomas' record, the record above him in the register has a mother with the name of Curran. His shows "Do". Did you see where the two witnesses for their parents' marriage were Jeremiah McCarthy and Thomas McCarthy? IF these were their fathers, their children's names make perfect sense in regards to the Irish naming tradition. I looked for Jerry's children's baptism records in the South Parish too, but did not locate them. There is no guarantee that is the parish where they were born, so it is difficult to conclude as the surname McCarthy is very popular in Cork. Did his children emigrate to Wales with him? Do you think his wife in Wales is different from the one who is mother to Patrick, Denis and Honora?

Finally, emigration/immigration records between Ireland and the neighboring countries in the current UK were not kept. It was a bit like traveling between the states in the US, for example. Folks just went back and forth without records of travel.

I just viewed your Ancestry tree, and I think that Mary (surname unknown) can be the mother to all four of the children..the first three born in Ireland and the fourth in Wales. I don't necessarily think that Mary Nowls is the correct person though. Again, if they used the naming tradition, her father would be Denis, and Mary Nowls' father is Maurice. It might be easier to search for a marriage between Patrick and Mary before the birth of their son Patrick, and then search for baptism records.

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for your advice and research, you've given me much to consider.

I've made a note of the transcription error you pointed out and corrected Jeremiah's mother Mary's maiden name to McCarthy on my family tree. I'm inclined to agree that Jeremiah and Thomas are likely Patrick and Mary's fathers respectively. It's unfortunate that they don't seem to have had daughters, otherwise we'd know the mothers' names as well! Patrick, Denis and Honora did emigrate to Wales with Jeremiah (and presumably Mary) as all of them are recorded on the 1851 Wales Census in Sully, Glamorgan. As is the youngest child Thomas. I located Thomas's birth record as he was born in Wales, which revealed his mother's maiden name to be "Nouls" likely a mispelling of Knowles or Newells (sorry that would've been helpful to include on the initial post). There's no record that I can find for Jeremiah's marriage to Mary which made me wonder if they common-law married and hadn't actually had a wedding. I do wonder if she may not have been the mother to the other three children. For several years, I believed she was, but the census records I have in Wales only confirm that Patrick, Denis and Honora were Jeremiah's children and omit whether she was their mother or step-mother. Given that I've no confirmation of when they married or the baptisms for those children I've decided for now not to assume either way.

--1851 CENSUS-- Taken on the night of March 30.

Residence: Hays Farm, Sully, Glamorgan

Jerey CARTY Head Married 50 Ireland [Farm Labourer]

Mary CARTY Wife Married 40 Ireland

Patrick CARTY Son Single 16 Ireland [Farm Labourer]

Dinnas CARTY Son 7 Ireland

Annora CARTY Dau. 5 Ireland

Thomas CARTY Son 7m Sully

That's a shame about the emigration records At least I have it narrowed down to the late 1840s for their emigration.

I agree that the baptism I've got linked to Mary Nouls at the moment is likely incorrect given the parents' names. I may look at possible baptisms in the vicinity of Cork City and see what I find. I also wonder if it's possible that Patrick and Mary McCarthy moved to another parish and had more children there, since two children is fairly uncommon unless one parent dies prematurely.

Wish me luck :)
