William Hickey
My Great Great Grandfather was William Hickey born 7th April 1821 in Queenstown/Whitegate//Corkbeg/Aghada/Cobh/Cork and died in Northumberland in 1904 (aged 83). He married a Bridget Scanlan (born about 1826 from Kilrush, Clare) in the 1840s. They had a child Mary Hickey in Ireland who I believe emigrated to Ohio (from Northumberland). My great grandmother Lucy was her younger sister but born 1862 in Northumberland together with other children.
In William's Orbit it mentions that he had at least 2 brothers who died in the Crimean War and all three were in the English navy. William saw service in the blockade of St. Petersburg in that conflict ,having joined the navy in 22nd July 1840.
I think it likely that William's parents were Maurice Hickey and Mary Barrett. Maurice (his father) was a tenant farmer in Aghada but I cannot find any other trace of him except he had the right to vote.
I was contacted at one time by a person in the USA about a James Hickey that she thought may have been William's brother. Obviously if all 3 brothers were very familiar with boating in Ireland it is understandable that they joined the navy. This James Hickey was also involved in boating /shipping I understand.
Does anyone know the names of the other children of Maurice & Mary Hickey?
Also did my William Hickey also have a son William Hickey?
