Melican and Hogan families from Ballyblood, Tulla Parish
I am researching my Melican and Hogan families from Tulla Parish.
On 11th February 1827 my ancestor was listed within the County Clare Tithe Applotment Books as Dennis Mealakan. He was living in area known as Knockmeal that was within the townland of Ballyblood, Parish of Tulla.
Although he was recorded by the variant spelling, Dennis Mealakan, my ancestor was more commonly known as Denis Melican.
Denis Melican was married to Margaret Hogan.
It is important to note that no other Melicans are listed living in the Knockmeal area of Ballyblood according to the Tithe Applotment Books. However, 3 Hogans are. They are Malachy Hogan, William Hogan (Senior) and William Hogan (Junior). Perhaps Margaret Hogan Melican is related to them.
Denis Melican and Margaret Hogan had 6 known children:
1) Matthew
born between 1808 and 1816
died 08 Mar 1892 in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia
married Margaret Donohoe in 1835 in Tulla
immigrated to Australia in 1854
7 children born between 1837 and 1852
2) Nora
birth and death unknown
married John Flannery
child: Mary Flannery who was born 02 Feb 1854
3) John
born before 1819 in Tulla
died between 1892 and 1897
resided entire life in Tulla
married Mary Butler
had 6 children born in Tulla Parish between 1848 and 1858
the 4 of 6 children who reached adulthood immigrated to USA
(Note: I am descended from this branch of the family)
4) Patrick
baptized 23 March 1819 in Tulla
5) Bridget
baptized 03 April 1821 in Tulla
6) Mary
born 1829 in Tulla
died 18 Aug 1901 in Woodford, Victoria, Australia (Age 72)
married 1856 to Robert Sproles
I am interested in the making contact with anyone having connections to the Melican and Hogan surnames in Tulla Parish. Also, I am interested in anyone who is related to the people associated with this family (e.g. Butler, Donohoe, Flannery, Hogan and Sproles).
