Daniel Keane born about 1817

Tulla (Clare)

My mother just found an old piece of paper with some names and dates. It was tucked away with old family memories.

My grandfather was very proud of his family heritage. But, unfortunately, he passed very little of that history down to us.

The paper reads:

GGF - Daniel Keane - Tulla Co Clare - 1817 - NOV 19 1861

Wife - Margaret Keane - Couny Island Co Clare 1817 - JAN 1 1879

Wife - Susan Keane - Tulla Co Clare - 1846 DEC 19

Matt, John, Ann & Mary Keane

William, Julla

I would assume GGF would be my grandfathers great, or great-great-grandfather. Although, not sure the timeline would add up for that to be true. His father, James Joseph Keane, was born in 1889 in Savannah, GA

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

It looks like there are several generations of James Joseph Keane. You need to still figure out how the one born in 1889 connects to Daniel's family. Also I have not found promising records in Ireland,

Hi

I think this is your James Joseph born 1889 family. In the 1900 census he is identified as Joseph and on the 1910 census they identify him as James Joseph. His father James was a policeman who died in 1903. Unfortunately, I have not found a death record for him, you might see if you can order one, which might list his parents' names. Some trees on Ancestry show James (1847-1903) as the son of Daniel Keane and Susan. The gravesites I included above do not show a son James so he might be connected to another family. Interesting that he named his children Daniel and Susan. James Joseph's mother was Mary Ryan (1850-1926). She was born in Ireland and on her death certificate her parents were listed as John Ryan and Margaret Broden. I tried, unsuccessfully) to find a birth certificate for Mary on RootsIreland (paid subscription). Note her mother's name might be misspelled, could be Broderick??

Hi

Mary Ryan Keane's gravesite info below. Note her son James Joseph is not mentioned. He is buried at another gravesite mentioned above. Perhaps James Keane (1847-1903) was not buried with his parents and siblings or no one added him to the gravestone. All of the family, including Mary Ryan, were buried at Catholic Cemetery.

On the 1870 census, there was a Mary Ryan born in Ireland, abt. 1852, living with the Pepper Family in Savannah. She was a domestic servant.

Thank you so much for all your research, Mary! This community is a godsend!

From what I can tell, Daniel's 1st wife Susan died in 1846. I believe, he remarried Margaret Keane from Couny Island (sp) in County Clare.

If this is accurate, James (1847) could have been the 1st child of Daniel and Margaret.

I, unfortunately, haven't been able to come up with anything more on Margaret, herself.

Hi,

There was a Coney Island, County Clare. I haven't found anything more on Margaret.

Clare Places - Coney Island or Innisdadrom

Coney Island, County Clare - Wikipedia

I wonder if Daniel and Margaret had additional children before he died in 1861? What happened to his/their other children? His mother died in 1852. Why isn't she on 1850 census? When a Margaret Keane died in 1879, her will designated Jeremiah Keane.Maybe I am looking at two different families?

Hi,

Since James (1847-1903 named his children Daniel and Susan, I assume those are his parents' names. Sometimes birth years are off. Without a birth record you cannot confirm.

In 1900, Jeremiah Keane was a lighthouse keeper. He named one of his children James Joseph.

Hi,

Daniel's children, all died early- not all birth years are accurate. The second year is their death year.

John 1841-1845

Ann 1843-1844

Mary 1846-1847

Julia -1849 (Margaret's daughter)

William 1850-1850 (Margaret's son)

Susan is actually buried at Colonial Cemetery where some of the other children are buried,

Hi,

Some other places to search

Clare Places - Parishes - Tulla Parish

Since Daniel brought his mother Mary with him maybe the family was ejected from their land.

Clare Genealogy: Donated Transcriptions: Ejectment Books of County Clare 1816-1835

Coney Island

If you could find out Margaret's surname, it will help your search. There were only 41 people living on Coney Island in 1901. You might consider ordering Nellie (Ellen) Keane Jasme (1857-1941) death certificate. It might have parent names listed.
