Cathy,
I searched RootsIreland (paid subscription) and did not find a record for Peter.
There are 465 trees on Ancestry for Peter. Not much supporting documentation. Some suggest he went and died in St. Lawrence, New York but that Peter had a wife Mary Ann. Did Peter leave Ireland? Did he die before Catherine? They also have him married to a Beddy Toole. Some suggest his parents were Michael Garrity and Mary Ellen Helen Crawford. Some suggest he went by John and died before 1851?

I once researched a Fox family in Ireland and found they also were called Shanaghy and McShanaghy in some of the records.
I also looked at this family in Ancestry's family trees and found Peter called Peter John and John. His birthplace was given in four different counties, so there is confusion among the people researching Peter.
Are you sure of Westmeath and Mayo? They are not near each other and in 1808 travel was not what it is today.
