town name for GG Grandfather John McInerny/McKnerney and Margaret Scott marriage

Clare

Hi,

I have been searching for any information to pinpoint where my GG Grandfather John McKnerney (the US spelling) who was born in County Clare.

I was recently notified that there was a new database on FamilySearch named "Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1740-1900" where I found a marriage record for John McInerny and "Marg.t Scott" on 11 October 1854 in Broadford, Kilseily, County Clare, Ireland. My GG Grandmother was Margaret Scott from County Clare. The direct link to that record is

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6N64-QVHZ

I am not absolutely sure that this is the marriage record for my GG Grandparents without any parent names.

I looked up that record at the NLI and found it at this link:

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634667#page/122/mode/1up

Their marriage is the last one listed at the bottom of the page on the left side. I have attached a jpg showing the bottom of that page.

What I am hoping is that someone can tell me what the place name is to the right of the names of the bride and groom. To me it looks like "Lissane" but I am not sure. I am also looking for help with the place name of witness John Hickey.

Thank you for any help!

Ray

I believe the spelling is 'Clongaheen', the address usually reads Clongaheen, Kilbane, Broadford, County Clare. Often the spelling of a place depended on how the person heard it or sometimes how well they could read and write.

Ray,

The site clarelibrary.ie also confirms what you found....the bride, groom, and one witness was from Lissane (a town land), and the other witness was from Cloongaheen...there is an East and a West on townlands.ie site. What is curious though is why the couple married in the RC parish of Broadford (where Cloongaheen is located) rather than the RC parish of Killone (where Lissane is located). One rarely finds parents' names in these early records. The parish of Killone is further west from the parish of Broadford - they are not adjacent. However, if you look at the entire page of records on the Clare Library site, you will see many different town lands that are also not in Broadford given for the couple's and witnesses' residences.

Regards,

Carolyn
