ThomasHalloran Margaret Meaney

Clare

My 4x great grandfather is Thomas Halloran born January 1824. My 4x great grandmother is Margaret Meaney born January 1822. Both came to upstate NY from Ireland in 1852. They married in Providence NY in 1853 and remained there until their deaths in 1906 and 1908. They had a son John in 1857 (my 3x great grandfather) and a daughter Mary in 1860.

I find both names on the Huron out of Limerick headed to New York June 8, 1852, but the ages are both noted as 30 yrs old. The manifest notes Thomas as a laborer and Margaret as a gentleman’s servant. The manifest also notes a 9 month old infant Thomas Halloran. There are no other Halloran’s or Meaney’s on the manifest.

I find no further mention of baby Thomas.

I haven’t found a record of them arriving in NY.

I find a baptism record for Thomas Halloran November 1825 at Tulle, Clare, Ireland. Parents noted as James Halloran and Catherine Kennedy. On someone else’s tree, from a record attached to their daughter Mary, Thomas middle initial is noted as K.

From someone else’s family tree I have Margaret’s parents as Michael Meaney and Anne Wildrick.

I found a James Halloran in the Tithe Applotment Books in 1825 at townland Ballyhenon, Quin Parish.

I found Michael Meany noted in Boulohera, Kilfidane, Clouncoole, Killuran, Deer-Island, Kilchreest, Coor-Clare and Kilmacduane.

I find no record of Thomas marrying the mother of baby Thomas or her death in Ireland nor have I found a record of the death of baby Thomas on the ship or in the US. All I can say for certain about the child is he is never noted in US census records.

Cindy,

On the Irish Emigration Database (dunbrody.com), the name listed along with Thomas Halloran on the Huron arriving in NY in 1852  is Bridgit Halloran, not Margaret.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn. I don’t know how I missed Bridgit. I did see Margaret Meaney on that ship and she is my ancestor. Married Thomas Halloran in 1853 in Providence NY. Their son John (born 1856) was my 3x great grandfather. So I guess I need to look for death certificates for Bridgit and baby Thomas.

Record from RootsIreland. Could this be Thomas' brother/ cousin? Perhaps he died or went on different ship to America. Another thought, infant Thomas was illegitimate and Bridget is Thomas' sister.

Cindy,

Have you considered that your ancestor Margaret Meaney met a different man in NY named Thomas Halloran? Not the one on the Huron with wife Bridgit and son Thomas? If that is the case, there is no need to look for the death records of Bridgit and infant Thomas, and that family could have gone anywhere in the US once they arrived.

The marriage records for the RC parish of Killaloe began in 1828, but I did not locate any record for a Thomas Halloran marrying a Bridgit there....there is no way to know where in Ireland that family of three on the Huron was from. It is interesting that in the 1860 census of Providence, Thomas Halloran and family lived 9 "dwellings" away from John Halloran and family.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn. The listing I first saw from the Huron didn’t have Bridgit listed. Only Thomas 30 laborer and Thomas infant. Margaret Meaney was also on that ship. The only thing about this I am sure of is that a man named Thomas Halloran and a woman named Margaret Meaney both emigrated from Ireland in 1852, married in Providence NY in 1853 had a son John in 1856 and a daughter Mary in 1860, lived the rest of their lives in Providence. There is no indication of the child Thomas in their family. I’d like to know where they came from in Ireland but I haven’t been successful
