Jack,
A century ago, in the 1926 Irish census, there were 87 MeIicans in CIare. We need more information from you in order to narrow down the search. Names of your reIative(s), years, etc.
Thank you, Patricia, for your interest and response.
My great-great-grandfather was named John Melican, born before 1819 and lived in Ballyblood. His mother's maiden name was Hogan and at least one of John's siblings emigrated to Australia. John was married to Mary Butler (1820-1877). His children, including my great-grandfather, left Ireland for America in the late 1870's. After his wife died in 1877, John Melican ended up in the Tulla Workhouse and died there in 1895. John Melican's son was named Denis, my great grandfather, who lived from 1856 and died in Elmira NY, USA in 1943. Denis had a brother named Matt who spent some time in Mountjoy Prison in the 1880's. Denis married Nellie Donahue (1865-1903).
