Sarah Doherty

Clare

Hello

I have my GGGgrandmother born c. 1837 in Ireland.  The only documentation I have prior to her life in Western Australia is the shipping record of her migration.  This states Sarah was born c. 1838, aged 18 years at the time, servant from County Clare.

This is all I have to lead me back to her place of origin.

Any help in trying to understand where in Clare she may have been from, or, where to research next would be gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Cathryn

There are 277 trees on Ancestry for Sarah, most suggest Edward and Ellen below are her parents (see below). I have not found any documentation to support.

Cathryn,

I did look at RootsIreland (paid subscription) and did not find and birth or baptismal record for a Sarah Doherty born in Clare around 1837. The parish she was from might have not started maintaining records.

You might want to try to find her death record. Sometimes they include parent names. I assume you can order from the Australian government.

Hello.  I have just stumbled across this and the replies I received.  My apologies to all.

MaryTV,

Yes this is my Sarah Doherty.

I too have noticed and known that there are many tree with Ellen Donovan and Edward James Doherty as Sarahs' parents and unfortunately I cannot find at the moment some correspondence that leads me to believe strongly that they are not.  From memory they emigrated to America and Ellen was born just 10 years before Sarah in or about 1825.  I will keep looking for the details to confirm as such.

I have just recently had some DNA matches come through after all these years, not with Doherty names though, but rather Hayes, Callinan etc.  All from either Clare or Galway.  If I understood more about DNA I may be able to go down that line.  It has lead me to believe though that Clare is definitely the correct area, along with Galway.

I have a copy of Sarah registered death which shows her age at death as 57 years in 1894, when she died of consumption.  I might contact WABDM and see if I can get access to a more complete death certificate or whether this is the best we can achieve.  No parents names are added on my one.

The name of her father listed as James is on her marriage certificate, and his occupation shoe/boot maker.  A book that is local to her area states he worked nearby, however I have not found any records to confirm that he was in Western Australia, let alone working on a local farm.  I checked with the property for records of that time period.

McCoy

Thank you for the record on Sally Doherty.  I have added it to other possible information to check out.
