Researching Joannis (John) Crowe & Mary Moy — Visiting Clare on October 5-9

Clare

Hello everyone,

I’m researching my 3rd great‑grandfather Joannis (John) Crowe and his wife Mary Moy (Moylan) from County Heath in County Clare. I’ll be visiting Clare with my son from October 5–9 to continue our family history work, and I’m hoping to connect with anyone familiar with Crowe families in the area.

I’ve gathered documentary evidence linking Joannis and Mary to their son Patrick Crowe, including parish records from FamilySearch, NLI microfilm references, and Patrick’s Find a Grave memorial. I also discovered that the Crowe family plot at Ennis Abbey (memorial ID 42301623) appears to have been merged with another memorial, and I’m trying to sort out the correct information before my visit.

If anyone has knowledge of Crowe families in the Ennis area, local burial records, parish registers, or the Ennis Abbey cemetery, I’d be grateful for any guidance. I’m happy to share the links and sources I’ve collected.

Thank you,

John

Hi John,

Why not contact the Clare Roots Society at https://www.facebook.com/ClareRootsSociety/

The local people might have knowledge of the Crowes and Moylans.

Good luck!

Thanks, but I contacted them on September 8th and haven’t heard anything but thanks for contacting us and we appreciate you getting in touch with us very much.

It is impossible to find information unless you can provide a timeline, when were John and Mary married, was Patrick the only child, when was he born ? Did members of the family emigrate and when/where to. Do you know when John or Mary died ? The location County Heath is not an area in County Clare, Ennis is the principle town in County Clare, if you can provide further information then it may be possible to trace records but the information you have provided so far will not allow for connections, Crowe is a common name in County Clare so I wish you well on your trip , maybe in the meantime you may have more information that we could help you with.

Sorry you haven't heard back from Clare Roots. Have you contacted the Clare Library? It has a very good local history and genealogy collection.

Eileen,

Thank you for your reply — I can now provide the full timeline you requested.

Parents • John (Joannis) Crowe, born 1784, died 2 Jan 1859 (Cork Examiner).

• Mary Moy, baptized 28 Jan 1799 in Kells, County Meath; died 1835.

Children of John & Mary (all born in Moyhill, Rath, Clare):

• Bartholomew Crowe, born 1819, died 10 Dec 1898 (civil registration).

• Patrick Crowe, born 1820, emigrated to Ohio, USA; miner; documented in the 1900 U.S. Census.

• John Crowe, born 1822, died 1906; emigrated to Ohio; the 1880 U.S. Census confirms residence and occupation.

• Michael Crowe, born 31 Mar 1828, died 29 Sep 1919; baptism and death sourced.

• Bridget Crowe, born 25 Jul 1830, emigrated to Ontario, Canada; married Michael Madigan in 1857; appears in the 1871 Canadian Census; died 23 Sep 1885.

• Daniel Crowe, born 14 Oct 1832; died at Christ Church, Ballynocally, Clare.

• Margaret Crowe, born 7 May 1834, died 27 Aug 1891.

• Jane Crowe, born 10 Aug 1835; mother died the same year.

Three children emigrated (Patrick, John, Bridget), while five remained in Clare.

I will be in Clare Oct 5–9 and would appreciate any guidance on Crowe families in the Rath/Moyhill/Ennis area, or on burial records connected to John Crowe’s 1859 death.

Thank you again for your help.

Patricia,

Thank you, Patricia — that’s very helpful. I’ve started reviewing the Clare Library Local Studies resources, and I plan to visit the Local Studies Centre in Ennis during my trip (Oct 5–9).

With the full Crowe/Moyhill timeline now assembled — eight children, three emigrants, five who remained in Clare — I’m hoping the Library may have parish boundary notes, graveyard surveys, or any donated Crowe/Moyhill materials.

I appreciate the guidance. This has been a major research effort, and your direction is invaluable.

Thanks,

John
