Mary O'Sullivan, Ennis

Clare

Hi, I'm searching for the baptismal entry for Mary O'Sullivan born @ 1843. And also, the marriage entry of her parents, James O'Sullivan and Norah Hare.

This is the information I do have: Mary married John Joseph Meehan on 24/01/1857, Ennis, Drumcliffe parish (I have the entry for that).

They immigrated to Australia after their marriage but before 1866 when their child was

born in Australia (I haven't been able to find an incoming record on Australian site).

On Mary's death certificate her parents are named James O'Sullivan, farmer and Norah Hare. Mary died 9 Nov 1917 aged 74 years.

Unfortunately, it doesn't state how long she's been in the Colonies.

Thank you.

Kind regards, Cheryl Rodwell

Cheryl,

The baptism records for the RC parish of Drumcliff (aka Ennis) began in 1841 and the marriage records in 1837. I looked on two sources - clarelibrary.ie and Roots Ireland for Mary's baptism record, and her parents' marriage record, but found nothing. Thus, she was probably born before 1841 and her parents married before 1837. Ages given on death records are not always accurate.

I just found a baptism record in the RC parish of Ennis for a Mary Meehan born 12 Mar 1858 to John Meehan and Mary Sullivan. The sponsor was Margaret O'Dea. The residence given is Sydney. Did they emigrate to Sydney? I have seen baptism records where it shows the father was overseas somewhere, but have never seen an overseas baptism reported in the RC parish in Ireland. I don't think that there is a town land in Ennis called Sydney. So, if this is your ancestor, then they emigrated soon after their marriage.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn, I shall give it a try

Thank you, ladies. This is the information I have though it all relates to the MEEHAN side, the O'Sullivan's are essentially a mystery.

Patrick Meehan b abt. 1800 married Johanna Kelly.

Children born: Bridget bap Dec 1829, *John bap Apr 1831, Mary bap Feb 1833, Patrick bap Feb 1838, Martin bap Oct 1841 & Thomas bap May 1844. All in the Kilmaley Parish.

*John Joseph Meehan m. Mary (O')Sullivan 24 Jan 1857 in Ennis.

Children born: Mary bap 12 March 1858 [in Ennis record, I'm wondering if she died at sea as she doesn't show up on NSW BDM), (following are in NSW records) Anne b 1866, Patrick Francis b 1868, Catherine (twin -my great grandmother) b 1874, Margaret b 1874 (twin) & John J b 1877.

Mary's maiden name is noted as Sullivan on some records, but her father is O'Sullivan on her death cert.

I've checked others Ancestry trees, but I seem to have more information than they have having bought death certificates for all the grandparents who came out to Aus.

Whatever information you can source. I'll add with a note to confirm link.

We visited Ireland 18 months ago going to the areas where my relatives came from, seeing the towns listed and in one case the church. That trip was special.
