John Connors (b. 1862, Galway or Clare, Ireland) – Migrated to Australia

Clare

I'm researching my ancestor John Connors, born in 1862 in Galway or Clare, Ireland, who died in 1923 in Caltowie, South Australia. His early life is a mystery. He arrived in Australia sometime before his marriage in 1888, but there are no known shipping or immigration records from Ireland, the USA, or the UK. Family oral history suggests he may have jumped ship or arrived unofficially. There is also a possible prison census listing that may refer to him.

Vital Information:

  • Name at birth: John Connors (also appears as Conners in records)
  • Born: 1862, Galway or Clare (per death certificate)
  • Died: 1923, Caltowie, South Australia
  • Marriage: 5 Nov 1888 to Violette (Violet) Ramsay
    • Violette’s Birth: 16 May 1865, Kapunda, SA
    • Death: 31 Aug 1947, Caltowie, SA
  • Children: 16 children born in Australia
  • Father (on marriage certificate): Patrick Connors
  • Migration: No confirmed records; may have arrived unofficially

DNA & Parentage Clues:

  • ThruLines and tree triangulation suggest two possible maternal lines:
    • Some believe his mother may be Catherine (Kate) Sayers from Dingle, Kerry (m. 1854 to Patrick Connors) Witnesses: Thomas Lander & Joseph Foley
    • However, DNA evidence more strongly supports Mary "Maria" Keane, daughter of Michael Kean (b. ~1795) and Bridget Kean (b. ~1795)
  • Father is likely Patrick "Patricius" Connors (b. ~1826 Ballyclery, Galway – d. 1908)
  • Mother: Mary Keane (b. ~1830 Galway – d. ~1900 Belclare, Kilcolgan Parish) (Connors, Connlley, Kean, Fahy - intermix)

Potential Brother of Patrick Connors?:

There is evidence suggesting that Patrick Connors had a brother named James Conners, possibly emigrated to the USA:

  • James Connors
    • Born: 5 May 1823, County Roscommon, Ireland
    • Died: 26 Nov 1897, Elston, Cole County, Missouri, USA
  • James’s wife may have been Bridget (Tierney) Conners
    • Born: 11 Mar 1837, County Galway, Ireland
    • Died: 7 Dec 1915, Ennis, Ellis County, Texas, USA

Connors Sibling Group (from DNA + Census):

John appears to be part of a sibling group who migrated in different directions:

  • Bridget (Delia) Connors (b. 11 Feb 1862, Cork – d. 1 Sep 1937, Pittsburgh, PA) (DNA confirmed)
    • Married Albert Hillebrecht
    • Appears in 1900 U.S. Census with:
      • Martin Connors (b. 8 May 1875 – d. 25 Oct 1942)
      • Thomas Connors (b. 23 May 1873 – d. 22 Sep 1948) (DNA confirmed)
        • Married Anna (Annie) Powell
        • Had daughter Catherine Connors (b. ~1904)
  • Cecelia Connors (b. 11 Feb 1884 – d. 12 Sep 1975) (DNA confirmed)
    • Married Martin Linnane
    • Confirmed DNA match through her descendants
  • Other possible siblings (supported by naming tradition + DNA):
    • Patrick Connors (oral tradition: eldest sibling)
    • James Connors
    • Mary Connors

These siblings link across Australia, UK the U.S.  (especially Pennsylvania), and Ireland, with many DNA matches confirming this cluster.

Census Records Supporting U.S. Links:

1880 Census – Bridget Connors & Connlley Family:

  • Bridget Connors (45, Ireland) appears to run a boarding house with the Connlley family
  • Likely the same Bridget later found living with Martin and Thomas in 1900
  • Confirms Irish-American household structures common among immigrants

1900 Census – Allegheny County, PA:

  • Thomas and Martin Connors listed as brothers, both day laborers
  • Living with Delia/Bridget Hillebrecht
  • Supports sibling theory and places family in Pittsburgh around turn of century

Naming Patterns & Clustering:

Names like Bridget, Mary, Catherine, John, Patrick, and James recur across multiple cousin branches. These are likely drawn from grandparents or great-grandparents and tie into our broader Keane–Flaherty cluster.

Common surnames in this DNA cluster include: Quinn, Flaherty, Larkin, Foley, Fahy, Floan, Joyce, Slattery, Connors, Feeny, Linnane, Connelly.

Areas of Focus:

  • Galway parishes: Kilcolgan, Lettermullen, Kilcummin, Clifden, Oughterard
  • locating migration records from Ireland → USA/ Australia

Research Goals:

  • Confirm the parentage of John Connors - and Identify his full sibling set
  • Identify the full sibling set of Johns Father Patrick Connors and Patricks Wife
  • Determine whether John’s mother was Mary Keane or Catherine Sayers or someone different
  • find Johns Baptism Records and shipping records

Laurie,

Please see attached in relation to a John Connors. There may be a connection.

Hi McCoy,

Thank you for your message and for forwarding the information — I appreciate your time.

Just to clarify, the details you've shared are already included in my current research. I’ve documented John Connors (b. 1862) in Australia quite thoroughly, including his marriage, 16 children, and his death. That part of his life is well-established.

What I’m now trying to uncover is who he was before he arrived in Australia — specifically, the identities of his parents and siblings, which may help reconstruct the earlier generations, particularly those in Galway or Clare.

Please revisit my original post and the attached documents for a full picture of what’s already been covered. I’ve included everything I’ve found to date, including references to his father Patrick, but I still haven’t been able to confirm his mother’s name or identify the wider family group.

A baptism record for John would be incredibly helpful at this stage — especially one that includes parental names and a specific parish. If you happen to come across anything along those lines, or additional clues like sibling names or migration records, I’d be very grateful.

attached is a Baptism record i did located but the date is not 1862, although the mothers maiden name does match with DNA matches.

although this census record seems to be more accurate

Thanks again,
