Immigrants to Philadelphia (McEntees, Clarkes, etc)

Shercock (Cavan)Magheross (Monaghan)

The past few years I’ve been researching records of a family member, Paul Clarke (born circa 1830) who immigrated to Philadelphia circa 1850. His records in Philadelphia were frustratingly few as he appeared to have died sometime between 1862 and 1870 leaving behind a family of three. Sometime after his arrival in Philadelphia in 1850, he married Bridget McEntee (born circa 1830). Paul and Bridget names their first born son Charles, and their first born daughter, Alice.

In order to narrow down his likely place of origin, I used cluster research to explore the persons Paul Clarke lived with and amongst. What became clear was there appeared to have been a community of Cavan/Monaghan expats who built a community on W. Thompson Street, and W. Seybert Street in the 20th and later 29th Wards of Philadelphia near St. Malachy’s Catholic Church. The community was anchored by Michael McEntee (born circa 1815) and Patrick McEntee (born circa1821) who housed, and employed many apparent immigrants from the Shercock/Cocreeghagh area of Monaghan. Although my research has not answered all my questions. I can feel confident that Paul Clarke came from Shercock Parish. Below is my research of persons who lived with Paul and other McEntees in mid 19th century Philadelphia. I hope my research might provide a starting point for others researching their family members. In 1849 a Paul Clarke is witness to the marriage of Patrick McCaul and Catherine Gillan of Killann Parish. His co witness is a Mary Clarke. My research of the parish seems to indicate the McCauls and Gillian’s were concentrated in Upper Glasleck/Killcrossduff Townlands in Shercock Parish indicating Paul might have been from nearby,

In the 1850 Census a Paul Clark, single, carpenter, aged 18 years old, is living in the 6th Ward of Philadelphia near the modern day Francisville neighborhood, alongside a John Lanahan (Lannen/Calalghan?), also a carpenter of age 18.

October 11, 1851, Paul Clarke is a witness to the marriage of Johannes (John) Callaghan and Miriam (Maria?) Reilly at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, Philadelphia, PA. His co witness is Catharine Duffy.

On January 13, 1856, a Maria Callaghan signs as a witness to the baptism of the son of Michael McEntee (Joannum Jacobum). That same year Paul Clarke, Philip Smith and John McCall are listed as living at Carlisle N. Girard Ave (McElroy's Philadelphia city directory).

In the 1858 edition of McElroy's Philadelphia city directory, Paul Clark, Carpenter, is listed as living at 1529 Thompson Street along with Michael Boyle and Michael Trainor, both laborers. In the 1860 Census, a Michael Trainor is recorded living in the 20th Ward of Philadelphia. His spouse is Rosanna Connolly. Michael Trainor dies in Ryan, Iowa in 1889, ages 60 years old. His tombstone notes he is from County Cavan. Later census records of Traynor’s children indicate Irish was spoken in the family home. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/33300626/michael-trainor). A Peter R. Lanning/Lannen was recorded living at 1529 Thompson Street by 1859 and remained recorded there in the US Civil War Enlistment Roster of 1863. Peter also listed in the same address in 1866 IRS Tax list. By 1871 he’s showing at 1523 Seybert Street. Peter was the brother-in-law of Michael McEntee.

Neighbors of Paul on Thompson Street were:

Patrick McEntee (April 27, 1821) married to Bridget McGrath (born circa 1826)

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83943390/patrick-mcentee

“PATRICK McENTEE, farmer, Section 8, Greeley Township, P. O. Salina, was born in Ireland, April 27, 1821, raised and educated in his native country. In 1846 came to America and first located in New York City for one year engaged in various pursuits. In 1848 moved to Philadelphia, Penn., where he was engaged as contractor in stone and brick work for about thirty years. In 1878 he came to Kansas and settled in this county on his present home of 160 acres. Married in Ireland, August 15, 1846, Miss Bridget McGrath; she was born in Ireland in 1826. They have by this marriage six children - Emma J., Thomas, James, Eugene, Charles and Joseph.” - William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas

-Son John McEntee baptized at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church on June 23, 1850 (first baptism at St. Malachy).

-1855 a “Patrick McEnter, carter” recorded living at 118 N. 8th Street

-1857-1858 a “Patrick McEntee, carter” recorded living at 17th and Thompson

-1859 -1861 a “Patrick, McEntee, carter” recorded living at 1619 Thompson

Michael McEntee (born circa 1815, died 1870) married to Catharine Lannen/Lanning (O'Leannain?) (born circa 1816)

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/209436978/michael-mcentee

-1850 Census lists a Michael “McAnalla” aka Michael McEntee (Age 30) along with his wife Catherine (Age 30), and son James in the Penn District of Philadelphia. Their neighbors were Michael Burns, John Callaghan, John McCall, Michael Brady, Peter Ryan, and Mary Lanahan (likely Mary Lannen who is recorded living with Michael in 1860). A Hugh Coyle also lives closes by.

-1856 -58 a “Michael McEntee, laborer” recorded living at 16th and Thompson

-1860 a Michael McEntee, carter” recorded living at 1617 Thompson. A Patrick Cooney, laborer, was also living at 1617 Thompson in 1858.

-December 1, 1896 Catharine Née Lanning McEntee dies. Formerly of 1541 Thompson

In 1848 the Shirley Estate paid for the emigration of a Catherine (15), Bridget (12) and James (10) McEntee of Corcreagh. **Tithe Applotment Book records of 1823 lists the only McEntees in Magheross Parish living in Corcreea and Sreenty Townlands, near Shercock. Griffith’s Valuation Book and 1901 Census Records lists no McEntees in Mullanarry Townland. It’s likely this Michael McEntee was connected to the Corcreagha McEntees.

-Bridget McEntee (born circa 1816), single, died in Philadelphia in 1891. In her will she lists her family as being Catherine McEntee married to Thomas Casey. She also wished to send money to Mary (née McEntee) Lynch, wife of the late James Lynch of Lisdrumfad (Shercock Parish). Parish records show Mary McEntee was the daughter of James McEntee from Corcreeghagh Townland in Monaghan. In the 1823 TAB, there is a James McEntee recorded in Sreenty townland. The other nearby McEntees are in Corcreeghagh (Owen, Peter, Patrick). She appeared to arrive in Philadelphia by 1873 where she’s working as a grocer and living with Frank/Francis McEntee (born circa 1841) at 1409 Bainbridge. Bridget’s will references Francis McEntee. A Francis McEntee, carpenter, appears in the 1868 City Directory, living at 1621 Thompson Street near Michael McEntee. In the years 1869-1870, Francis McEntee has moved into 1617 Thompson Street with Michael McEntee and Matthew McEntee. In this death certificate, Frank lists his parents as being James McEntee and Mary Duffy of Monaghan. He possessed property located at 1614 Seybert Street deeded to him by Bridget in 1880.

****There is a Philadelphia death record for a James McIntee dated 18 May 1848. James’ age was listed as 56, placing his birth circa 1792. Interestingly, Michael McEntee would name his first born son James. Further, another neighborhood associate, Mary McEntee, who married James Smith in Philadelphia listed her parents’ names as being James McEntee and Mary Keating. It is possible that James McIntee was their father, as he was certainly old enough to have sired children in 1816 and 1821. In the Freeholder Lists of 1825, there is a James McEntee recorded in Nolagh Townland. He does not appear in the Griffith’s Valuation of 1857, indicating he’d either died or relocated. Cooneys were prominent in Nolagh as well, which could explain why the McEntees were known to have closely associated with Cooneys in Philadelphia.

*****In the 1857 Griffith Valuation there is an Alice McInteer recorded living in Nolagh next to a Michael and Owen McInteer (father of Terence McEntee?). In 1868 an Alice McEntee dies in Bailieborough area, aged 82. This is likely the Alice McInteer recorded in 1857. She was possibly kin/wife to either Peter, Michael or James McEntee recorded in Nolagh 1823, and later listed as McEntires in the TAB of 1830, indicating the record name variations of McEntee/McAtee/McAntee/McInteer/McEntire.

****From 1869 -1872 a Matthew McEntee (born circa 1837), machinist, is living with Michael McEntee at 1617 Thompson Street. In December of 1873 there is a death certificate for a minor female child, aged 0, born to Mathew McEntee residing at 1341 N. 17th Street, Philadelphia (no mother listed). Matthew marries Mary Tierney (born circa 1851) 20 February 1879. Witnesses are Michael Dougherty (who lived at 1808 Thompson St) and Anna Tierney (St John the Evangelist Church). By 1880 he is living at 2412 Ingersoll Street where he is listed as a blacksmith. Matthew McEntee died on 28 January 1897. A newspaper article published after his death noted he was discovered by his brother-in-law Thomas Tierney. The two were recorded living at 2426 Grant Ave. Grant Avenue no longer exists, and is now known as Clifford Street. In 1873, Michael Cooney was recorded living at 2524 Columbia Ave (now Cecil B. Moore Ave), just a block away from where Matthew McEntee and Thomas Tierney would later live. The book History of Sons of Saint Patrick by John H. Campbell includes a profile of Thomas F. Tierney from Shercock, Cavan who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1866. Mary McEntee is buried next to Thomas F. Tierney verifying she was the sister of the Shercock, Cavan Thomas.

In 1920, a Mary Clarke, born 1882, is living with Mary McEnty and Thomas Tierney at 2426 Clifford Street. Mary Clarke, single, is listed as McEnty’s niece. In 1930, Mary Clarke is residing at the same address with her younger brother, Terrence Clarke, his wife Ellie, and their family. Mary McEntee and her brother Thomas Tierney have since died. Genealogical records identify siblings Mary Clarke and Terence Clarke as being the children of Terence Clarke, Sr. and Catherine Farrelly of Nolagh. The parents married in 1882 and were identified as being from Ralaghan at that time. Terence Sr’s father is listed at Peter Clarke, who Lin 1901 and 1911 was living in Nolagh with his son. Both Mary and Terence Clarke Jr noted their parents spoke Irish in the home (US Census 1930). Terence, Jrs’ wife, Ellie Clarke, was the daughter of Peter Clarke and Margaret Tierney of Killcrossduff. Margaret was sister to Mary née Tierney McEntee and Thomas Tierney of Philadelphia, hence how Mary Clarke was their niece. It appears siblings Mary Clarke and Terence Clarke initially settled in Philadelphia and ultimately assumed residence in the Ellie Clarke’s sister’s residence.

***In Thomas F. Tierney’s will written in March of 1905, he lists his family members as being sister Mary McEntee, brother Edward Tierney, sister Ann (née Tierney) McDaniel, sister Margaret (née Tierney) Clarke, brother-in-law Michael Duffy, niece Elizabeth Duffy and niece Catherine Clarke. His niece Mary Clark is also noted and bequeathed significant money annually. Interestingly he specifies he wants Christmas presents bought for his family members annually from Patrick Clarke and Sons of Shercock, Cavan. Thomas’s sister Margaret, of Cornalara, married Peter Clarke of Killcrossduff in 1871. Peter’s father is listed as James Clarke, Margaret’s father was Pat Tierney of Cornalara. Mary Clark was baptized on 13 December 1872. Witnesses were Edward Tierney and Alice Boyle.

In 1867, Thomas Tierney, clerk, appeared to reside at 1611 Seybert Street (property possibly owned by Michael McEntee), near the McEntees on Thompson Street, his first year in Philadelphia. His roommates were Patrick Smith, painter (*in 1875 Bridget McEntee, singlewoman, sells to Frank McEntee property in the 28th Ward. A Patrick Smith is a witness), John and Patrick McBreen, Bernard Larkins, Daniel Dougherty, and Philip Connell, all masons. It is likely these men worked for the McEntees. These men lived just a few doors down from John McCaul and James Hand. By 1868, Thomas had relocated, and switched professions to painter, likely due to the fact he could not procure work as a clerk.

***In 1860 Census a Michael, James and Thomas Cooney are living with Michael McEntee at 1617 Thompson Street. The Cooneys were recorded in the same residence in the City Directory for multiple years afterwards and were witnesses to various baptisms of neighbors (see below). Deed records document how a Michael Cooney, boilermaker, of the 20th Ward bought undeveloped property on Dott Street in 1864. In the City Directory for the year 1869 a Michael Coney (boilermaker), Philip, Thomas, James and Edward Coney were recorded living at 1526 Dott Street. The Cooneys/Coneys are listed at this address through the 1875 City Directory. In the first enumeration of the 1870 Census, collected in June, Michael and his family are listed on Dotts Street. By the second enumeration collected in November of 1870, Francis and Kate King are listed at 1526 Dotts Street. Conversely, Michael Cooney and his family were now captured living on the south side of Columbia Ave.. My research confirmed that in March 1870, Michael Cooney, carter, obtained a land lease for undeveloped property on the south side of Columbia Ave. In the City Directory of 1873 a Michael Cooney, driver, was first listed at 25th and Columbia Ave indicating he’d made permanent residence there. By 1877, Michael purchased the property on Columbia outright (later identified at 2524 Columbia). In the 1880 Census Michael Cooney was still living on Columbia Ave with his wife, children, a Thomas Cooney and two James Cooneys both listed as brothers (likely brother Edward was mis-recorded as the second James). Although not certain, my hunch is Michael and his family were building their future residence on Columbia in the early years of the 1870’s, leaving them to split residences between Dott Street and Columbia Ave.

On 1 April, 1873, the Philadelphia Inquirer published a newspaper article documenting the following,”Charles Strafford, colored, a hod carter living at No. 8 West street was charged with entering the yard of Michael Cooney, Twenty-fifth street and Columbia Avenue, Saturday night, and attempting to steal ducks and chickens. When arrested he had in his possession three ducks which had just been killed. The accused was held on $50 bail for court.”

In January of 1879, Philip Cooney died aged 78. His address was listed at 2524 Columbia Ave. In the Griffith’s Valuation of 1857 there’s a Philip Cooney listed as renting a house in Nolagh Townland on the land of Patrick Callaghan. I have found no civil death record of a Philip Cooney of Nolagh leaving open the possibility the Philip Cooney who died in Philadelphia came from Shercock Parish. As an interesting aside in 1854 and 1855 Philip Cooney of Nolagh was brought to Court for being caught selling spirits without a license, indicating he was a possible potin distiller. Could Michael Cooney, “boilermaker” gained his experience building pot stills for/with his father (pure speculation)?

Circa 1870 another Michael Cooney and his wife Mary McCagh immigrated to Philadelphia, along with their minor children to include, Bessey. Church records verify Bessey/Elizabeth was baptized in 1867 in Enniskeen Parish, and her parents were listed as being from Taghart (adjacent to Nolagh/Ralaghan). In the 1870 Census, Michael and Mary were living in the 20th Ward in the vicinity of Ridge Ave and 18th ave. In the Philadelphia City Directory of 1870 and 1872 another Michael Cooney, porter, was listed as living with Michael “Coney” and his extended family on Dott Street, likely in the years before the other Cooneys relocate to Columbia Ave. I believe this Michael and Mary of Taghart lived temporary with/ and or rented from the other Cooney family. In 1880, the Taghart Michael Cooney, mason, appears to have relocated to 2447 W. Seybert Street a block south of Matthew McEntee and Ingersoll St. By 1887 they had relocated to 1703 Bambrey Street, across the road from Cooneys on Columbia Ave, and two blocks away from Mary and Matthew McEntee and Thomas Tierney.

-1860 Census a Phillip (25) and Ann Smith (19) are listed as living with Michael McEntee. It’s unknown if Anne Smith was Philip’s wife or his sister/relation. There is a Killann baptism record in 1841 listing the birth of Anne Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary Clarke. An Anne Smith and John Traynor are witnesses (believed to have lived in Ralaghan). There is a separate Phillip Smith (35), married to Annie (33)(née Fitzpatrick) Smith also living in the 20th Ward. His children are named Rosanna, Michael and Edward. Rosanna dies in 1861 and her address is listed as Carlisle ab Girard (possible 1220 Carlisle St.). The 1857 Baptism record of Paul and Bridget’s daughter, Catherine, list Phillip Smith and Anna Reilly as witnesses. In the Philadelphia City Directory of 1858, Phillip Smith and John McCall, laborers, are still listed residing at Carlisle and N. Girard Ave, where the two lived with Paul in 1856. In 1860 a Philip Smith and Catherine McEntee (later married to Thomas Casey?) witness the marriage of Jacobum (Jacob/James) Smith and Mary McEntee. On July 2, 1854, A Philip Smith witnesses the marriage of John McCaul and Catherine Shields. John McCaul died in Philadelphia in 1867, his address was listed as 1617 Seybert Street, mere blocks away from where Paul Clarke, Michael McEntee and Philip Smith lived.

Below is a list of baptism and marriage records from St. Malachy’s Church, North Philadelphia. Any records gleaned from another parish are noted in parenthesis.

****19 June 1848 Michael McEntee, laborer, appears to have paid for indenture of a 3 story brick tenement building on Thompson street for $36 annually. Witness to the indenture is Patrick Lannen. In 1855 Michael appears to have purchased the property from its owners outright for $600.

****6 January 1850, James is baptized, son of Michael McEntee (McEntie) and Catherine Lennan. Witnesses are a John Callaghan and Bridget McEntee (St Francis Xavier Church Records).

****20 January 1850, Rasa is baptized, child of Terence and Sarah Clarke. Witnesses are Charles Reilly and Mary Lennon (St Francis Xavier Church). In the 1850 Census (25 July), Terence and Sarah Clarke (both aged appx 25) and a Ross Clark (male aged 7 months. Possible wrong gender?) live with Michael McEntee and a “Mary Lannahan.” In 1860 there’s no record of Terence and Sarah in Philadelphia. A Mary Lannen is living with Michael McEntee, aged 60. A Charles Reilly is listed in City Directories on 16th and Seybert near the McEntees. A search for Terence and Sarah in Philadelphia or anywhere in the US in the decades after 1850 have proved fruitless (to date). On 24 March 1844, a Terence Clark is witness to the baptism of Patrick Finnegan, son of Patrick and Rose (née Clark) Finnegan of Maghercloone Parish. Patrick Finnegan, Sr., farmer of Greaghwillin dies in 1884 aged 75 years old. On 18 October 1848, Terence Clarke of Magheross (parish?) marries Sarah Finnegan of Maghercloone (Greaghwillin?). Terence is also recorded in Carrickmacross Petty Court records as early as 1853. In 1857 Griffith Valuation there is a record of a Terence Clarke in Corcreeghagh. There is a baptism record of a Patrick Joseph Clarke in 1862, son of Terence Clarke and Sarah Finnegan of Corcreeghagh. Terence Clarke of Corcreeghagh dies in March 1877 aged 54 with his son Patrick as a witness. In 1882 Sarah appears to have immigrated to Connecticut with her daughters, where she died in Fairfield County in 1891. Is it possible Terence and Sarah returned to Ireland after a failed attempt at life in Philadelphia?

***17 July 1850, Patrick McCabe marries Sarah Boyle. Witness is Margaret Boyle (Cathedral of St. Peter’s and Paul)

****5 April, 1851, John McGuire marries Susan Shields. Witnesses are Eugene McCarty (?) and Catherine Shields.

Bernard Larkin’s death certificate from 1916 records he was born in County Monaghan to Peter Larkin and Margaret Smith. In Griffith’s Survey lists a Peter Larkin in Corcreagh townland bordering Shercock, near a James McAtee. On 19 June 1875, a Mary Larkin of Corcreeghagh marries Hugh Lennon of Faraghy., Mary’s parents are listed as Peter Larkin and Margaret Smith of Corcreeghagh. In 1879 a Margaret Larkin of Corcreeghagh, married, dies aged 70; witnessed by a James Larkin.

This Anna could also be the future wife of Bernard Larkin. * In the will of Bridget (née McGrath) McEntee, wife of the late Patrick McEntee, she bequeaths all her jewelry and wearing apparel to Rose, her niece, verifying Elizabeth was Bridget’s sister. Elizabeth “Eliza” Farrelly died in 1911. Her death certificate listed her father as being John McGrath and her mother’s surname as Miller. Thomas died in 1902 living at 1723 Thompson Street.
