searching for Fagans in the Lough Gowna area
I am trying to locate people who are related to a Fagan family that lived around the Lough Gowna area, on the border of Cavan and Longford counties. I have a strong DNA match on MyHeritage to Mary Carmel Smith, who was born in 1937 in Loughduff, Cavan to Peter Paul Smith (1900-1988) and Mary Elizabeth Fagan (1913-1997). Mary Elizabeth Fagan was born in drumlumman parish, Cavan, to Terence Fagan (1870-1937) and Maria Kiernan (1879-1927). Both Marys were only children, but Terence had 3 brothers (Patrick, James & Bernard) and one sister Mary (Mary and Patrick emigrated to Philadelphia). Mary Carmel Smith emigrated when she was 19 to San Antonio, where she joined a missionary congregation.
I am attaching a screen shot of a tree I have built for this portion of the family. My 2xggrandmother was Catherine Fagan (born abt 1822 in County Cavan, emigrated to New York City abt 1840). My best estimate was that she was a 1st cousin of Charles Fagan, Terence's father, but the records have run dry. Mary told me "In the home place of Carton Free, Aughnagarron, Co Longford where my mother was born, the Terence Fagan Family: there are two Fagan houses at the end of a long lane, one was my mother’s birth place now just ruins, and the other was Fagan cousins." I hope to visit this fall, to continue my research, and would love to connect with a descendant of the family. Thanks! Joe Pierce
