Need Ancestor Homesteads Locations

Abbeylara (Longford)

Hello Wonderful People,

I have researched and have data of ancestors: Lynch, Mitchel(l), McCaffrey, Farrelly. My cousins and I are traveling in August to Ireland and have days for visits to homesteads. The counties are:

Cavan (Lynch - Ballyjamesduff, Farrelly - Cornakill)

Meath (Mitchel - Teerworker)

Longford (McCaffrey - Abbeylara)

I believe I have identified some of the homesteads using census and Griffiths.

REQUEST

I would like help in confirming homestead locations. And, if possible, we would love it if we could have a Meet-n-Greet with volunteers in the mentioned counties in August.

Please let me know what I need to do going forward. I wanted to check before just sending everything.

I have trees in Ancestry and saved documents. I’ve also used Roots and Irishgenealogy.ie sites.

I am happy to use email and/or phone calls using WhatsApp,

Thank you,

Maryellen McCaffrey

In Griffith's Valuation of Longford in 1855, the only head of household named (Mc)Caffrey in Abbeylara was a Patrick, who lived in the townland of Ballyboy. See:

You mention using Griffith's, but did you look at the accompanying maps (askaboutireland.ie)? Patrick's reference on the map is 1A, so that should show you where the homestead was. Ditto for your other ancestors.

Hope this helps!

Maryellen:

Can I suggest that you fill out our Meet and Greet form for each area of interest https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet Two questions on the locations. You show Teerworker in Co. Meath. Is it possible the townland is Teevurcher in Moybolgue civil parish? You show Cornakill in Co. Cavan. There are three Cornakill townlands in Cavan. Do you know the civil parish?

The Griffiths Valuation is very helpful in determining where a house is located in a particular townland. The 1901 and 1911 censuses are not always helpful. The house numbers listed on the census records have little value. The numbers were assigned by the RIC constables as they came into a townland. The first house visited was House 1, the second House 2, etc. That is why families were shown as House 5 in the 1901 census but House 17 in the 1911 census.

I think it would be better if you provided what info you have for each family. Maybe one family to start such as the Lynch family in Ballyjamesduff. We don't need Ancestry trees but let us know what info you have. After the Lynch family, we can move to Farrellys etc.

Thanks!
