Catherine / Shercock Marriage 1889

Cavan

Hello, I am looking for information regarding my great grandmother.

Her name was Catherine Breslin she married Peter James Maguire on 07 January 1889.

I have a copy of their marriage registration from Bailieborough, County Cavan, District Shercock.

Catherine and Peter married at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Shercock.

I have a copy of the 1901 and 1911 census. Catherine and Peter lived in Shercock and had eight children including my grandmother.

The marriage record states Catherines father was Francis Breslin and at the time of his daughters marriage, Francis Breslin had passed away.

The marriage registration notes Catherine was born in Glasgow. I believe she was born 1864.

I am looking to find out 1) Catherine's mother was and 2) when Catherine Breslin Maguire died.

Thank you, Anne

The only birth record I could find in Scotland was a Catherine Breaslin born February 18 1855. Father Philip Breaslin and mother Jane Crainer. The record was in Whitburn, West Lothian. Scotland. Record located on Ancestry.com

Hello Again

Thank you for providing information about the death registration for my great grandparents Catherine and Peter James Maguire of Shercock.

For others who might be reading this board, Catherine (Kate) and Peter had eight children: Peter James, Margaret (Maggie Jane), Mary Anne, Katie, Edward, Thomas Francis, Bridget, Michael.

Mary Anne Born December 5, 1891 and Bridget Born August 31,1898 both came to New York City

Mary Anne married James Joseph McGuire June 26, 1914.  They raised four children in Queens New York - City

Bridget married Ralph Bethel (British) November 9, 1919. They divorced but raised four children in Bronx New York - City.

I have Bridgets Birth registration from Bailieboro, Co. Cavan.

If someone can provide Mary Anne's Birth Registration born approx Dec 5, 1891 (Bailieboro, Shercock) I would appreciate it greatly and add to my geneology file.

Sincerely, Anne (great grandaughter of Bridget).

Hello

I have a document dated 1857 from County Cavan; BallyJamesDuff.

The top of the official document says Extract from the Census Return 18...

It has the name of applicant: Bridget Delaney and its lists the father and mother as Peter & Mary Delaney.

I have enclosed the document as an attachment.  Can you explain what this document is about.

Anne24

Anne:

Bridget Delaney was filing for the Old Age pension in May 1917. In order to prove that she was 70, a search was made of the 1851 census to see if Bridget was listed and how old she was in 1851. ( As an aside the 1841 and 1851 censuses were still available in 1917. They were destroyed in 1922).Usually the results were written on this page. The form shows that an extract was made and sent to Bridget but what were the results?

Thank you for your explaination about pension confirmation for Bridget Delaney. This is so insightful to recording keeping so very long ago.

In that document the name of applicant is Bridget Delaney.

The second line says address: Mrs Bridget Smith, of Ballyjamesduff.

1) Does this second line indicate Bridgets married name is Smith?

2) Your reply questions what was the result of the extract. I currently do not have an answer.

However, I did find an addition inquiry for Bridget Deleney, same parents. I enclosed this additional document in an attachment.

On this document the address/name is Bridget Donohue.

Thank you for your time, Anne

Anne:

My question about the results of the search was rhetorical.

Yes, I assume Bridget Smith was the married name for Bridget Delaney. I was unable to find a church or civil marriage record for Bridget Delaney to a Smith. However, I located six baptismal record for children of Bridget Delaney and Patt Smith in Co. Cavan. The children were Bridget 1873 Rose 1875 Peter 1876 James 1878 Patt 1880 Mary Anne 1882. The address on the 1882 baptisma showed Killanure which matches the address on the 1917 census search form.

The second form you sent me is from February 1917 compared to May 1917 on the first form. I can only speculate. Perhaps the response to the first form was lost and Bridget filed a second time three months later?

The 1911 census for Lackanmore townland shows a Bridget Donohoe in one house https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Ballyjamesduff/Lackanmore/348786/ and a Bridget Smith in a nearby house https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Ballyjamesduff/Lackanmore/348788/ Maybe in the February filing , Bridget used her neighbor's house for the mailing address? It does not make sense but my only explanation.

Thank you for this information.

My paternal grandmother born August 31,1898 in county Cavan at some level is connected to the Bridget Delaney family and Ballyjamesduff.  I have not found the connection yet.

The name Bridget Delaney is on my grandmother Bridget Maguire and her older sisters Marys marriage documents from New York City.

Additionally, my grandmothers brother in law, Mary's husband James McGuire (born in Louth Ireland) worked at Patrick Delaney Bar and Grill, 3rd Ave, New York City.

I am aware Maguire, McGuire and Delaney are common surnames. However, these surnames keep grouping together in my family history.

Thank you again for your help, I will get this some deeper thought.  - Sincerely, Anne

Hello

In an earlier repy you noted that you have access to some Roman Catholic Baptism Certificates.

Regarding my above inquiries about my grandmother Bridget and her sister Mary Anne whom both came to New York City.

If you can find Mary Anne's baptism record that would likely list the sponsors, which could help me with me some missing information.

Mary Ann was born 12 May 1891 Bailieborough, County Cavan, District Shercock.

Likely, Saint Patrick's Church -Shercock. Parish Killann, Diocese Kilmore

Mary Anne's mother was Catherine Breslin, father Peter James Maguire. They married on 07 January 1889. Saint Patrick's Church -Shercock

I have a copy of their marriage registration from Bailieborough, County Cavan, District Shercock

I do have a copy of Mary Anne's civil birth registration: listed as 89. I found this information online.

Sincerely, Anne

Anne:

The subscription site Roots Ireland shows the sponsors to be Antony Clarke and Rose A. Clarke.

Writing on behalf of descendants of Edward Maguire/Mcguire. We have been unable to find out anything on the Breslin side. Our search had led us to believe some family were in the USA. Edward ended up in Scotland.
